I'm still trying to dig up the actual terms, but I am finding sure makes it look like Iran has achieved a massive strategic victory over Team Shitstain. Most notably:

"The two-week ceasefire plan includes allowing both Iran and Oman to charge fees on ships transiting through the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow mouth of the Persian Gulf, a regional official said Wednesday.

...

The strait is in the territorial waters of both Oman and Iran. The world had considered the passage an international waterway and never paid tolls before."

I think Wikipedia will eventually call this a major Iranian victory, not just because of the above, but also since this means sanctions are pretty much done, which in turn means the containment policy is kinda over.

All in all, the regime comes out richer and victorious, their propaganda validated, and in a stronger position overall. The small gulf states that _used to_ have free access to the sea no longer do, so they're no doubt feeling pretty fucking betrayed. But that's what you get for cozying up to the Shitstain - or the GOP in general, which never met an ally it wouldn't betray.

Iran will probably throw out a few tokens to help Shitstain claim victory (or maybe not, he'll claim it regardless) but... what a shitshow.

Should I revise this? I should revise this. And revive it. Whatever.

Looks like Netanyahu is still onboard the Trump Train. Fool.

Also, that their invasion of Lebanon isn't part of the deal, so that war is still going.

@moira No need. Putin is a major beneficiary.
@moira This is probably the same type of victory Trump will claim after China takes Taiwan by military force. Our assets are now in the Med and middle east. We have depleted a lot of our munitions. Trump is confused and weak. Congress is divided. Given what a fiasco he is as commander in chief, China might not wait to take Taiwan until after Trump’s successor is elected. There probably isn’t a better time than now. But everybody makes mistakes. Even China.

@patrick The bigger concern here for me is the South China Sea and that network of artificial islands they're setting up to try to claim it as their sovereign territory.

That doesn't mean you're wrong, mind you, that's just not what comes to mind first.

@moira
Not that the small gulf states haven’t lost on this; but, if what they expected from the US *wasn’t* eventual betrayal & being kicked to the curb wounded & bleeding, then their foreign affairs departments were apparently woefully uninformed about 20th/early 21st history in that regard.
@Gorfram He is the greatest corrupter of humans I have ever seen or even imagined. He, and his movement. It really is like watching mind control at work.

@moira

All that, and in addition I've seen no formal, credible reaction from Israel

Zionist Twitter is supposed to be going absolutely ape shit, but yeah…

@FinchHaven As well they should be. The gulf states aren't the only countries being betrayed here.

@moira @FinchHaven

This has a bit of "boy (wolf?) who cried wolf" vibe to it, like Shitstain has huffed and puffed this same threat too many times, just more dramatic / unhinged each time. People, even his "allies", seem to be pretty done with his BS.

He may have a much harder time lining up support for "freeing" Cuba.

But even an ever-lamer-duck prez is still prez, still has many levers of power to yank.

@moira literal tens of billions of dollars of income. Forever and ever as long as the straight and Iran exist on planet earth.

In another thread I noted (cynically) that not only is all good will between “the west” and Iran erased permanently now there is additional costs to shipping and actively paying for weapons and training to combat the US.

The us has historically fumbled basically every war that wasn’t WW2 (and that wasn’t perfect by a long shot) but this is humiliating.

It not only penalizes the US but every single nation that wants to ship through the straight.

Unironic self imposed oil tariffs. Good fucking game lol

@moira

"“It is emphasized that this does not signify the termination of the war,” the statement said. “Our hands remain upon the trigger, and should the slightest error be committed by the enemy, it shall be met with full force.”

See. Not bullying. Just stating a previously demonstrated fact.

I'd say T should take lessons, but I'd much prefer he did not.

@moira

I'm questioning whether Israel has read Iran's 10 points.

"The statement said Israel also supports U.S. efforts to ensure Iran no longer poses a nuclear or missile threat."

The missiles piece is never happening, and we can all see why, and that that is reasonable.

@moira

Karoline Leavitt, "“The truth is that President Trump and our powerful military got Iran to agree to reopening the Strait of Hormuz, and negotiations will continue,” Leavitt said in a statement."

Except, no he did not. He got an agreement of a ceasefire, provided everyone stops firing at Iran, and he got Iran to sit at a table.

I trust Iran sends a very junior clerk with a phone. Trump's record of assassination the second he identifies a leader is almost 100% when it comes to Iranians

@moira @BruceMirken And if they waited for the 85 year Ayatollah to to pass on naturally there would have been a leadership vacuum that may have led to moderate leadership given the domestic unrest. One gets the feeling that Netanyahu didn't want that, he wanted a fight, still wants one.
