Does anybody have a dustpan that you can actually push the dust into without just forming a nice line of dirt on the floor?
@dillyd I don’t think so
@dillyd It's an exponential decay thing. YOu get most of it in and make a line. You sweep perpendicular to the line and sweep it in again. When it's an acceptable level, you grab a rag and do a final wet wipe.
I do it at least once a year.
@dillyd
i always found it highly dependent on the brush too. i did have a lovely set with a metal dustpan and a brush made of ... something? but that was years ago.
@moonrabbit @dillyd i think a metal dust pan could have a thin enough edge to work
@carolannie @dillyd
it had a rubber strip along the edge to stop it upsetting the floor, but it worked beautifully with the brush. which was quite soft. some natural fibre but i can't remember what. black with a wooden handle.
@moonrabbit @dillyd horsehair I'll bet.
@carolannie @dillyd
if it was, it was ethically gathered; it was from a super eco site. possibly something veggie ...
@dillyd it's what one has a rug for ;)
@dillyd technology cannot solve that problem it seems
@dillyd I think only fairies, gnomes and leprechauns are allowed to have those

@dillyd

I do, but they're hard to find. It needs to be one with the thin strip of rubber along the edge. I mostly use my vaccuum cleaner instead of a broom, mostly because of those stupid lines and because of corners; brooms just don't get into the corners well.

@Bette
I have one with the rubber edge but it still doesn't work. Maybe the rubber is worn

@dillyd

I have some that don't work well, too. Bad design?

@Bette @dillyd I have one with a sloping rubber edge too, but it never helped. Either it or I am unskilled at dust-brushing-up.
@dillyd Actually do have one. It's red plastic with a rubber edge. None of the metal ones will do this trick.
@johnlehet @dillyd OH. I had that one once. It was good.
@dillyd We'll have cold fusion and vat-grown organs first!
@dillyd my grandma used to lay newspaper with a wet lip in front to stick to the floor. genious, but can’t find newspaper anymore 😔
@argonaut @dillyd Now there's a trick I must try. Thanks for sharing.
@argonaut but if I'm going to use wet paper, then I might as well use a wet paper towel to wipe up the line of dirt!
@dillyd i prob explained it poorly: you put a newspaper with only one thin border wet, then it sticks to the floor, so when you push dirt on top of it from that wet border, the paper won’t move and you can broom all the dirt onto the newspaper without forming the dirt line. hope that’s better.
@argonaut
I see, so, instead of a dust pan, not in addition to a dust pan?
@dillyd
yeah. i found when i started using a heavy lobby dustpan it wasnt really an issue anymore. i only need a second pass if there's a lot of very fine dust, usually it's good in one.
@dillyd of course I do. I keep it right here next to my combined clothes drying+folding+sorting machine.
@oblomov
I guess they sell them at the same store!
@dillyd I have one, but you have to be very careful with it or you could cut off your fingers without even feeling it.
@dillyd Impossible! The only thing is to get the Henry out and let him snort the line up.
@pre ummm, what or who is the Henry?

@dillyd Oh, you never know how international a brand is. In the UK the Henry is the standard office-cleaner and builders kit. If you buy an industrial number of vacuum cleaners you seem to end up with an army of Henrys.

He loves to snort it all, always got a smile on his face. 😆

@pre aww what a happy little worker!
@dillyd I am hoping it turns out that one really exists. Like that time it turned out that a teapot that never drips, that literally cannot drip, exists. Life-changing.
@dillyd
I'm hoping that my eyes will lose enough focus soon that mine will work.
@hypostase idk I've already lost a great deal of focus and it isn't helping yet
@dillyd
I guess I'll be waiting for the cataracts then. Going by the ancestors that should only be another 20 years.
@dillyd I am a fan of the long handled brush and pan, so much easier. Possibly encourages more frequent dust -> pan thus reducing risk of residual rows?
@dillyd I expect this technology was developed in 1973 and immediately suppressed by Big Vacuum.
@dillyd I find the brush I use on my hair works equally well with my dust pan which then works well as an ice scraper. The circle of life.
@Nead
I suspect your hair is much more thick and interesting than mine
@dillyd Oh, the folly of the follicle. If only 'twas 1987 again. <sigh>
@dillyd u speak of witchcraft
