First time composting in the backyard, and this bin (started about a year ago) turned out brilliantly. A sample after sifting.

@db I barely ever garden and yet, good dirt looks so attractive. I’d almost eat it (but should not)
@db Do you keep worms?
@letterror Right now just getting the hang of green stuff + brown stuff + letting nature do its magic, but I’d like to experiment with worms as well if it’s not too complicated (this is at my inlaws’ so we’re not always attending to it)
@letterror Hmm, that actually might be the perfect idea to try at the office… 🪱
@db Once saw someone really farm them. Trays full. Not my thing, personally, but they mostly take care of themselves.
@letterror @db My wife has taken up keeping worms (indoors) to supplement her composting efforts. Certain conditions do need to be attended to. Her first attempt failed. But the current “herd” seems to be getting along now without too much fussing.
@kentlew @letterror I was surprised to not find any spontaneous earthworm populace in the entire bin, just a few maybugs in progress. Maybe they got bored.

@db @kentlew @letterror From my own experience, I’d say it takes about 2–3 years in a 3 bin system to get a considerable worm population. Some horse dung seems to have helped in my case, too.

Never had as many as my grandparents, though. Their compost has been sitting in the same place for decades. That’s it.
