Do any of you have accomodation recommendations for #singapore, #penang or #KualaLumpur? Ideally we’re after places under SGD250 a night and that other than Penang are near train stations. I’ll be travelling with my parents who are older and may want to spend more time in the hotel so not super basic is also preferable
@joannaholman if you can swing it for a couple nights, marina bay sands is pretty good. Close to the gardens, casino, shopping and you get access to THAT pool. I think I paid $450 per night for a room with two double beds.
@joannaholman also close to the train station
@SeaFury unfortunately probably a bit out of the budget this time but spent a night there on a previous trip. That pool was so fun!
@joannaholman Singapore? Food centers/hawker centres. The best food for the best prices. The science museum is good, too, but I generally just cruise around Singapore, through Little India, anywhere there's good food or good bars
@sortius agreed! I know the Singapore attractions pretty well but getting stumped on accommodation because I normally stay in budget ibis hotels the people I’m travelling with don’t like the look of
@joannaholman I stayed in a Park Royal I think. Was quite reasonable, middle of the bar areas. Cheap is relative in Singapore, though
@joannaholman One thing I'll say, is backpackers, cheap stuff, is just not there as much any more. They've really pushed the bottom end out. You'd be better staying in Jahor or the like and taking a bus/train over
@sortius thanks, yeah Singapore will stretch the budgets, hopefully we’ll be able to balance it out in Malaysia
@joannaholman I really liked the Savv hotel in Penang. The rooms are small but comfortable, it's in a great location (very short walk to the Butterworth ferry), has a lovely little pool and very good value.

@joannaholman When do you go? We are on the way from 22nd of April, starting with Sngapore. Already booked most of it, and it might suite you. Just have to ask Qian, my better half, who did the bookings so it's all on her computer right now. If you go later I could tell you whether they are any good. But we aren't supercritics, we take it relaxed.

I will ask and let you know.

@joannaholman

I think we stayed at Hotel Bencoolen on the China Town side of Clarke Quay. It's about 10 minutes walk to the train. Nothing special, but clean and fine

@joannaholman

Saying that, it was about 10 years ago

@joannaholman Take a look at the Carlton Hotel Singapore https://www.carltonhotel.sg/

Depending on when you travel, it's likely to be at the sweet spot between Marina Bay Sands (where you'd stay if money is no object) and Ibis.

Not the newest hotel, but recently renovated and decent facilities. Not the best location, but you're a block from Town Hall Station, on the green line from Changi.

You've got the Raffles City shopping centre diagonally opposite, meaning coffee without being killed by humidity too long.

@joannaholman in Singapore I stayed at Furama River Front last time and it was really good, considering the space and price issues there. Decent space in the rooms, under $250, and a nice pool.
@joannaholman it's about a 10 minute walk to the train, but there are buses about a 3-5 minute walk away.

@joannaholman

I live in Penang but don't have any clue what the hotel/accommodation situations are unfortunately. I'll boost this in case anyone following me does. Hope you enjoy your trip!

@joannaholman I can recommend lyf funan in Singapore. Has a self service laundry on site. Very budget but clean and well located. In the Funan centre and short inside walk to MRT .Buses galore stream outside.
