Whenever I can't sleep¹ there's nothing better than a comfy, stupid, familiar movie. You know. An orange cat of movies. Not so stupid to make you groan, but must only require one braincell.

I'm looking to expand my repertoire.

Current insomnia movie is Pacific Rim.
I put it on, and may not make it to the end. Nap land in 3..2...1....zzz²

Now, importantly, collecting responses:

What is your naptime movie? Why?

#movies #recommendations

¹ that's tight now
² I won't reply until I'm zzzzz...

Some of the previous insomnia movies are:

The Matrix
Boondock Saints
Hellboy
Lost Highway

As you can see I'm not one bit precious.

@jjcelery
Lost Highway? That's nightmare territory
@negative12dollarbill I honestly have tried to watch that movie about dozen times before I finally managed to make it through the end - and would fall asleep every time. It has a very weird effect on me.
@jjcelery I guess if you don't get to the scary stuff that could work. Maybe it's the sound which does the trick? Lynch's soundtracks are unusual.

@jjcelery I am more into audiobooks these days, but when I watched more movies:

Shawshank Redemption
Master and Commander
Highlander
PS I Love You

@CStamp @jjcelery Ooooh… Master & Commander… the movie equivalent of a hot chocolate and a good book.
@chongliss @CStamp oooh Master and Commander, it's been years since I've seen that!
@CStamp I recently rewatched the Highlander and weirdly desired a feathered hat 😄

@jjcelery Terence Davies’ “Of Time & The City” for me.
It’s my favourite movie of all time, and I genuinely believe it’s not only the greatest work to be committed to film, but one of the greatest works of humanity.
It’s a seminal piece that has all that is gorgeous about life.

But that it is made entirely of prose and poetry and beautiful music, with slow, ambient black and white imagery, makes it perfect to settle the mind and help one feel safe enough to sleep.

5/5 Sleeping Tablets

@jjcelery I often play it’s audio and close my eyes…
I might even do it now….
@chongliss that sounds lovely, but not likely my cuppa tea. My tastes, alas, seem to be more mainstream 😅
@jjcelery these would all keep me alarmingly, distressingly engaged *eyetwitch* which just goes to show how precious you are, silly >_<
@crowbriarhexe I promise you the novelty and "engagement" with the movie wears off over time 😂 eg. I have lost count of how many times I've watched The Matrix and I can quote entire passages of the Boondock Saints verbatim. At that point it's just extremely familiar and comforting, and bam, naps 😴
@jjcelery I was more into shows for sleeping, but I used to fall asleep to Garden State, Hot Fuzz, and Shaun of the Dead.
@sillyCoelophysis oh yes, three flavours of cornetto make a regular appearance on the nap list. The Greater Good.
@jjcelery The ‘50s version of The War Of The Worlds; but basically *any* MST3K (the first 10 seasons) or Rifftrax I’ve seen before. I don’t know if you’re familiar with the outrageously non-canon Doctor Who + Daleks movies from the ‘60s with Peter Cushing as the “””Doctor”””, but I’ve spent many a night gratefully lulled into oblivion by the Rifftrax commentary version of them both 😂 Also, given your obvious masochistic streak (yes, I’ve seen your most recent sewing projects 😅), the Star Wars Holiday Special may fit the bill, but even (especially!) in that case I would beg you not to go without a Rifftrax commentary 😭

@crowbriarhexe haha this is a very UK list! All of these shows completely passed me by and I find them intriguing, but not nostalgic, so they sorta don't work the same way.

Most of my nostalgia sci-fi shows are American 🤔

(also: me? masochistic? scoff! 😉)

@jjcelery My dad was really struggling to stay awake during that new documentary The Dinosaurs (voiced by Morgan Freeman)
@mikelovesbikes oh, going on the list! I'll check it out.
@jjcelery Interstella 5555 is my sick movie, makes dozing in and out of consciousness very pleasant
@tal oh, gonna check it out!
@jjcelery Interesting! If I were to watch something to fall asleep to, it’s usually something repetitive or that I can’t quite ‘compute’. My brain gives up and I go to sleep.
@kevinteljeur once you've seen a movie more than 10 times it doesn't need to be computed, and is a repetition... so I guess?
@jjcelery If you can sleep through the oil tanker scene, you may have taken too many sleeping tablets :D
@markdennehy I usually make it as far as Beckett's and Mako's sparring scene and then conk out 😅
@jjcelery ... never have I witnessed a wider gulf between men and women :D :D :D
@markdennehy I don't think this is a gender thing, I think it's me being weird thing 😂
@jjcelery interesting take. To me any screen is bad at night, specially with sound and moving stuff (or doomscrolling :) I prefer reading, and similarly, anything I read already, so I don't try to fight the sleepiness to finish a chapter :)
@mdione I don't tend to re-read much, and reading is the worst: I can't put down a book unless I'm so tired it has smacked me in the face... by which time it's the morning 🥲
