People are generally reasonable; this is the only reason we can be trusted with elections and democratic rights

If you (somehow) need more evidence that the anti-DEI stuff is just plain naked racism, look no further this latest set of executive orders, in which schools NOT punishing minority students more severely than white kids is now considered a form of "discrimination".

Trump's executive orders target colleges like Harvard, DEI in education

President Donald Trump has ordered sharper scrutiny of America’s colleges and the accreditors that oversee them. It's part of his escalating campaign to end what he calls “wokeness” and diversity efforts in education. Trump signed a series of executive actions Wednesday, targeting universities that he views as liberal adversaries to his political agenda. One order called for harder enforcement of a federal law requiring colleges to disclose their financial ties with foreign sources. Another called for a shakeup of the accrediting bodies that decide whether colleges can accept federal financial aid awarded to students.

Just like Apple and Costco, Levi Strauss & Co. was targeted by conservative think tank the National Center for Public Policy Research to drop its DEI programs. And just like those other companies, Levi's said no — more than 99% of shareholders voted against the proposal, a position also taken by the company's board. Michelle Gass, president and chief executive officer of Levi’s, told WWD earlier this year: “We’ve been committed to diversity and inclusion for literally decades, and it’s the core to who we are. So our commitment remains unchanged. We will do what’s right for our people, for our business. And at the end of the day, building a diverse and inclusive workplace helps us deliver stronger results.” Here's more.

Horrific to have a family member missing for a month, only to discover that he's been sent to a Salvadoran death camp.

My mom was a primary school teacher in the latter half of the last century. During book-banning debates at her school system in the 1980s — over Dungeons & Dragons themed books, of course; Satanic Panic was in full swing — a speaker who’d been brought in by the banning side said that schools shouldn’t be allowed to teach critical thinking skills because if you needed a thought, God would give it to you. There was much agreement from the audience, she said.

I think about that a lot these days.

I've currently been doing a tonne of work on Doorkeeper, a Mastodon dependency for OAuth, and currently that work is mostly uncompensated.

I'm also doing a reasonable amount of work on the standards side (W3C & IETF), which is also uncompensated.

I'm not making ends meet at the moment, so if you can spare €5-10 a month, please do consider supporting my work on Mastodon, Doorkeeper, standards, and the wider Fediverse.

I'm currently running a deficit of about €1000-1600 per month, which is completely unsustainable.

(there's also one-time, but ongoing support is what enables me to do this important work)

I want everyone who hasn't learned anything from it to feel too stupid and ashamed to speak about politics until they do.
