More than 80,000 people have signed a petition on the official website of the UK Parliament calling on the government of the United Kingdom to pressure Israel to repeal a law allowing the death penalty for Palestinians.

According to the petition, the legislation constitutes a blatant violation of human rights and international law. It urges the British government to use its diplomatic influence to prevent the law from being implemented.

Under the parliamentary petitions system, if the number of signatures reaches 100,000, the issue can be considered for debate in the House of Commons. This would allow lawmakers to formally discuss the legislation and take an official position on the matter.

A petition, lodged at the end of last year ahead of the final vote passing, calls on the UK Government to "act urgently" to urge the Israeli government to stop the law.

"We believe that such a law would constitute complete violation of the Geneva Convention and International Human Rights Law. UN experts have called for these proposals to be dropped," the petition states.

It also calls on the UK Government to "apply considerable and substantial political pressure and the leverage of its international obligations" to prevent the law from going ahead.

A number of legal challenges to the bill have already been lodged with Israel's supreme court.

👉Meanwhile, Amnesty International said the new legislation is "one of the world's most extreme death penalty laws", arguing that "Israel is brazenly granting itself carte blanche to execute Palestinians while stripping away the most basic fair-trial safeguards". 👈

Politicians have also condemned the law, with Zack Polanski's Green Party calling for the Israeli ambassador to the UK to be suspended as a result.
