@DeltaWye asks:

Q7. Is there a rule of thumb for #bicycles that donโ€™t get used often where the tires should be changed out after so many years?

(What else should be changed periodically, based on time, regardless of usage?)

@ascentale @DeltaWye @bikenite #BikeNite A7. I go by the "10 year rule" which is the rule for car tires, even if not driven. Or earlier if you see any sign of aging or it was stored outside in UV light. I made the grave, grave mistake (fortunately without a crash) of driving around on my road bike's 40+ year old tires, where it practically crumbled into bits and where the tube was so soft it would not detach from where it had melted into the tire itself. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND. ๐Ÿ˜ฌ
@annehargreaves @AE4WX @ascentale @DeltaWye @bikenite That's what happens when you stop bicycling for 20+ years and decided to start bicycling again, lol (on your original bicycle you bought in high school). And where you don't know what you are doing. (thankfully, #BikeNite exists... which really has brought me up on the learning curve).
@ai6yr @AE4WX @ascentale @DeltaWye @bikenite ๐Ÿ˜Š Enjoy your re-found biking!

@ai6yr @annehargreaves @AE4WX @ascentale @DeltaWye @bikenite I made the mistake of letting the fear of traffic / new situations keep me off the bike for nearly 20 years after moving to Japan. I'd done a lot of my own maintenance before that. But there was a sea change in technology by the time I'd started riding again. A lot to learn about aheadsets, V-brakes, 1X, etc.

Not that I'm complaining -- I've loved catching up on everything. And oh yeah ... the riding, too!

@oheso @annehargreaves @AE4WX @ascentale @DeltaWye @bikenite That's why I wasn't riding. Traffic. The only reason I got on my bike again (and I have told people in our city about this) is because they painted bicycle lanes on the road outside my house!!! It's not as good as a separated bike lane, but it reduce what was a two lane monstrosity (speeding drivers, etc. etc.) into something more manageable for someone in a bicycle!!!
