@ai6yr asks:

I broke a chain for the first time, far from home! Luckily, the local bike shop was downhill. I coasted down & paid them to replace the chain (needed a spare anyway, took the old broken one home to add new links and re-wax). It appears I'm not packing all the tools I need.

Q4. What tools should I carry on all bike rides? (I usually carry a patch kit & small pump, but no chain tool nor master link) What else am I missing?!

I've logged over 100,000 miles over the last 23 years since I took up cycling in earnest. I've never broken a chain. I've only seen a chain broken once on all my group rides. But a broken chain leaves you stranded if you can't repair it in the field. In my case I have only been stranded by flat tires, either I had two flats on a ride, or the spare tube failed. So now I carry two spare tubes on any long ride.

I have lost a screw on my cleats for the clipless pedals. I couldn't clip out and crashed, and that cut that ride short, so now I carry a spare cleat screw when touring. I've broken shifter cables at least 4 times, but you can usually ride back to the start, albeit with extra effort. Once on a tour it caused me to skip a day as it broke on a Sunday and no bike shop was open. I broke a spoke once, but the wheel was true enough to get home.

@MartyCormack I have a tenth of your distance logged and have never had a chain break either but it's a constant worry since it's the only likely thing I can't fix on the road with my current toolset. My plan is to use the bike as a kickbike until I get home or to a train/bus 🙂

@MartyCormack @ascentale @ai6yr @bikenite had a chain break once on a recumbent cargo bike with a full load (brox compact). On a regular one - person upright, my experience matches yours

I did once break a rear mech when I crashed in an audax and i suppose I could have used a chain tool to shorten the chain and complete the ride single speed - but I was pretty banged up myself as well and decided I'd rather bail

@MartyCormack @ascentale @ai6yr @bikenite here's the bike in question
@dan @MartyCormack @ascentale @bikenite LOL is that a set of giant speakers?!?!?!?

This Fury Road remake is gonna be epic 😃

Been there, done that. Both on the chain breaking and the having two flats. The latter even at the same time.

Two chain breaks in the years I'm on a roadbike, both times going full throttle up a hill, max force on the pedals and therefore chain. I probably should check the chain more often for damage.

And now I see your comment, I'm thinking I do not have two tubes on my new bike, because it did not fit in the fancy new saddle pouch... 😬

@tinyspheresof @MartyCormack @ascentale @ai6yr @bikenite Someone once stole my sister-in-law's chain off her bike when she was shopping & bike locked to a bike stand. Came back - no chain!
