@bobjonkman asks, in regards to group communication:

Q2. Does anyone use whistle codes? The sweep can whistle twice to get the leader to slow down (spreading out too far is the most common problem I see on group rides), maybe three times for a full stop.

Are there standardized whistle codes for this kind of thing?

(Or are there other nonverbal auditory codes for this?)

No.
But this is a great idea. I'll suggest we implement this for our group rides. As a ride leader it would be very helpful if the sweep could let me know when the group gets spread too far out or if someone has a mechanical issue.
@ascentale @bobjonkman @bikenite #BikeNite A2. I could whistle out Morse Code, but that would require A. bicycling with other people and B. bicycling with other ham radio people who know Morse Code. πŸ€”

@ascentale @bobjonkman @bikenite A2. I don't, but am also pretty new to group rides. I do use whistle commands for the dogs (only one really works...), so I could see a quick whistle code for group rides being useful.

@ascentale @bobjonkman @bikenite A2. I never learned how to do the really loud kind of finger whistle, although I suppose I could use a metal whistle.

It reminds me of border collie whistle commands, though.

@meganL @ascentale @bobjonkman @bikenite when I was an apartment pool lifeguard I endeavored to learn to finger whistle ;) It sometimes works.
These days lots of people are carrying whistles. I like the idea for when we have an event ride. Group rides... usually separate into clumps and that is fine.
@ascentale @bobjonkman @bikenite A2. No, but as a barely related response, I largely lost the ability to whistle by biting through my tongue while faceplanting in an over the bars incident a few years back. I have photos. You don't want to see them. #BikeNite
@pete @ascentale @bobjonkman @bikenite You're right about that! Hoping that was the extent of the damage.
@ascentale @bobjonkman @bikenite #BikeNite A2. I am not familiar with the concept of "whistle codes", except insofar as three sounds in succession are generally recognized as a call for urgent aid, so I would avoid using that, unless actually warranted.

@gcvsa

In SCUBA cave and wreck diving we use rope-pull codes. A single pull isn't a code, could just be a snag. Two pulls is both question and answer "OK?", "OK!". Many pulls in a row is "Something is wrong."

I trained with ACUC; Wikipedia says other diving associations use different pull codes. So much for standardization.
