Since it wasn't immediately obvious to me when I first looked, freepixel.art / freepixelart.itch.io is AI slop, not actual pixel art produced by humans.

There are loads of assets created by actual artists on places like itch.io and opengameart.org. Search the #PixelArt and #ドット絵 tags to find lots of artists here on Mastodon!

@Taffer thinking on it a little more, I think the entire concept from top to bottom was spat out by an LLM and not looked at critically by a second pair of eyes. That’s why it doesn’t make any sense

@Taffer I had a feeling. They appeared out of nowhere and we're pumping out *tons* of assets like crazy.

I feel like it's uncontroversial to say we already need serious legislation passed explicitly restricting copyright and ownership of anything AI generated (let alone restrictions on how models are trained) but we *also* need strict legislation forcing people to disclose what is AI generated. I wouldn't be surprised if people have been using AI slop without realizing it.

@Taffer in general, you have to be very careful about AI slop on itch.io these days, it's easily half of all new assets.

Fortunately, AI usage disclosure is now required for all game assets so look in the product details.

@Taffer I run into this all the time doing product mock ups and manipulations. Lots of places are selling/subbing ai texture stock and assets and they aren't listed as such.

@Taffer had to go Verify. behold the "Epic" standard of quality (as a bonus i fear "Epic" may be their paid tier thing maybe. they might want u to pay money for this???) (most of em aren't "second head on bellay" obvious but they're like, All animated really weird. i don't think a human is even glancing at em before posting)
