RHEL (its whole ecosystem like Fedora, CentOS and others) Could be getting AI slop soon. Leaked memo suggests Red Hat's chugging the AI Kool-Aid. An internal memo dispatched by senior execs at Red Hat suggests the software biz is starting to push AI tooling within its Global Engineering department. RHEL may be about to get some Windows 11-style "improvements." https://www.theregister.com/2026/03/31/red_hat_ai_dev/

I am not surprised with age ID and other stuff they are forcing via systemd along with AI slop.

@nixCraft I really hope Ubuntu / Linux Mint doesn't drink the Koolaid. This nonsense is getting out of hand.
@nixCraft I believe Poettering no longer works for RH?
@chiraag @nixCraft No. He left for M$ and now co-founded a company.

@chiraag @nixCraft The last I knew about him was he was working fooooooooor...

Microsoft (until Feb, 2026)

@nixCraft «As Bruce Schneier noted nearly a decade ago: "We know the market does not pay for quality software. The adage is good, fast, and cheap: pick any two. The market has picked fast and cheap at the expense of good. Pretty much everywhere, software doesn't work very well."»

And that's why libre software is better.

@nixCraft It will be goodbye to Fedora for me if they go down this path.

@nixCraft "Improvements"? From Winsuc 11?

😱

@nixCraft Ah, it all makes sense now. No wonder I got off the RHEL/CentOS Kool-Aid throughout 2015-2019.
Twenty-three ways alcohol could save your life

For more than 200 years, American bourbon has spread from its birthplace in the mountains of Kentucky throughout the country and beyond. Though the details of this liquor’s origin story are often conflicting, original bourbon distillers were likely Scottish and Irish settlers who craved their familiar, Old World whiskey and adapted their ancient recipes to New World ingredients such as corn. No ordinary moonshine, bourbon is aged in new charred oak casks until it has an amber color and a fiery but smooth finish.

@nixCraft say what you will but it's times like these I wish that xz utils backdoor had made it into RHEL.
@nixCraft not sure why this is a problem. AI will definitely kill traditional "we support you and bugfix your stuff" business in a whole. Experiment now and survive or disappear. That's the reality.
@nixCraft It's quite possible that "enterprise-anything" IT is doomed to drown in their own tanks of self-inflicted kool-aid... 🤮
@nixCraft Odd flex to illustrate this using an obvioulsy AI generated image
@nixCraft Sad news. To my knowledge there is nowhere to run in regard to what RH provides.
