Would you rather be a cowboy, a samurai, or a pirate
cowboy
samurai
pirate
Poll ends at .
lmao i love the immediacy people are responding to this poll with zero explanation, like this is a question everyone's just ready to answer

every fucking poll has some smartass chiming in with “what about option D???” by now

nope, just cowboy, samurai, pirate

everyone's somehow got an answer locked and loaded

@lety
I choose pirate since their code is more of a guideline.
@meadow do cowboys have a code???

@lety @meadow

1) be rootin
2) be tootin
3) and by god be shootin
4) but above all, be kind

@PavelASamsonov @lety @meadow be kind to what? Their whole job is about hurting others

@lety
You know, I don't actually know for sure. I do know my memory banks have the phrase "That's (not) the cowboy way" stored in them. I can't find any notes to indicate if the familiarity of that phrase is from Hollywood, books and legends, or a factual historical reference, but that phrase comes from somewhere."

A search tells me I know the phrase from a film but also that Gene Autry published a cowboy code. The code, I must say, is respectable and one I would follow, but given he was an actor, it seems it's likely only a Hollywood thing

Gene Autry's Cowboy Code

Cowboy Ten Commandments, aka Gene Autry's cowboy code. The cowboy must never shoot first...The cowboy must always tell the truth...The cowboy must...

@meadow @lety some things I've read about classical pirates actually describes them as something of a socialist ideal.

@LovesTha @meadow @lety

You can't steal what you're not allowed to own, seems to be one of the most common 'pirate' themed ideals these days.

I do like the idea of modern day digital 'piracy' being a moral and ethical stance though.

@lety I went with pirate. Insert "plundering booty" joke here.
@lety the three primary genders of which all subgenders propagate
@tunafishtiger my pronouns are yo/ho
@lety ho representation is so important
@lety cowboys are inherently gay culture and I chose cowboy out of respect for the game
@tunafishtiger @lety cowboys are the gay ones!? see "Sodomy and the Pirate Tradition: English Sea Rovers in the Seventeenth-Century Caribbean, Second Edition" https://www.jstor.org/stable/j.ctt9qfq2r
@mensrea @lety we can all be gay if we’re lucky, it’s not a competition

I chose Samurai. (Also already likely a pirate.)

@jbaggs heck of a career change then lol

@lety

I may have to get a new sticker for the back of the helmet, but I'm assuming Samurai aren't really into stickers.

@lety I feel like these cover most things older people played pretend as kids. Only thing I could think of to add is Ninja/Power Ranger.

@VirsagoStein I think I upset someone who chimed in with that like 40 responses in by calling them a smartass

But I meant like, “smartass (lovingly)”

@lety

No, I had to think about this.

My understanding is that being a cowboy is a hard job that doesn't pay much. Doesn't sound like a good time.

I don't think I could handle hurting or killing people, or even threatening to do so, so I don't want to be a pirate. Also, I think it's pretty difficult to make a good living doing that, too.

Samurais, you gotta like deal with all that shitty feudalism, but at least you get to live comfortably.
