@mikebabcock @transworld this isn't a fallacy though. "No ethical consumption under capitalism" doesn't mean "it's ok to spend money with this person actively funding the eradication of human of a certain category". The dog analogy is literally 1:1.
(Not talking to the transphobe but to anyone else reading; of course I blocked this asshole rather than attempt "discourse" with someone who's already made up they're mind that it's ok for people to die for their consumerism)

jk rowling’s words and actions against trans people are truly awful. but the art/artist argument is real and complicated.
art becomes so much more than the artist. and yet the originator of something is paid the primary royalties.
if i enjoy the art, how do i reconcile that with the originator’s current actions?
i used to love hp. rn there’s so much other (better) fantasy i have discovered and fallen into. is complex
@vex @mikebabcock @transworld 2/4
the moment a work of art is taken into the hands of readers, it begins a journey where the art could cross contexts and cultures the originator could never have imagined. it takes on its own meanings.
the early potter fandom with all of its attendant webshows, wattpad pieces, and all the hp cosplay is an example. excited fans took a thing and ran with it.
@vex @mikebabcock @transworld 3/4
looking at it now, i’m not attracted to the new hp stuff.
part of it is that it doesn’t feel like it has the craft and joy that the original releases had and built.
but maybe part of my disinterest comes from just knowing the weight of supporting a living artist who funds the eradication of certain people.
@vex @mikebabcock @transworld 4/4
maybe a happier ending to the comic would be the person bending down to the dog to say, like,
“i used to really love this. but you see that sign? even if they try to bring it back, for that and a million other reasons, i’m not ultimately interested in supporting them.”
anyway that’s how i feel about hp. it’s different and nuanced with every artist depending on what they do/have done.

'there's no ethical consumption under capitalism' was mean to highlight that you should swap economic systems, not sink into nihilism, and definitely not sit here pretending just because every purchase causes a problem there's no relative scale between smaller problems and huge ones
and JK Rowling giving 100% of her 15% cut of all Harry Potter stuff to a "Womens" Fund so women who want to sue a random trans person, get them kicked out of employment or healthcare or housing, have all the financing they need
that money also goes to three huge Anti-Trans organizations; Sex Matters, For Women Scotland, and LGB Alliance - who will not stop until Trans people have no protections in UK law
perhaps you should try engaging with people like me, who's life has been destroyed, who has to piss in a disabled toilet because male and female is cisgender only
you wouldn't mind if I spent 15% of my next purchase on a local organization that would strip you of rights, yeah?
fool
@theatremaker @vex @mikebabcock @transworld
Art and a human relationship to it is complex. Politics is very practical. You can possibly separate loving the art from the artist (if you can unsee what's under the surface of it), but you can't separate financially supporting the artist from the artist.
@theatremaker @[email protected] @transworld a person who buy blood diamonds over lab grown diamonds exhibits racism due to contributing to funding the exploitation.
A person who buys blood art exhibits bigotries as well. JKR literally uses money from her franchise to push laws & lies that literally result in fewer rights (i.e. increases exploitation & death) for women & trans men. You being stuck on "art vs artist" when the prior art-free example shows it's irrelevant, is avoidance, not a mistake. You simply want to enjoy your blood media without caring about the blood. & You want other people being ok with you not caring.
coca-cola...ex...ec...u....
:sigh:
You forgot your "acKsHuLly". are you trying to be sneaky?
dude. stop. Just stop, ok. You're embarrassing the other mansplainers... 😬
nah.... but thanks for the offer. really!
That sealion seems to have tremendous arguments...
I guess I'll just stop giving to charities, as it's pointless since I do not give to ALL charities.
It's called a boycott. You don't need to provide your purchase history to some random person on the internet to participate in a boycott, and ask others to participate too.
@mikebabcock @transworld this is literally about JK Rowling and the author has said as much. This isn't about Coca Cola. JK Rowling didn't invent Coca Cola. This is about the Harry Potter franchise. It's really easy not to buy Harry Potter crap. You don't need Harry Potter to live.
There are a million other authors that write about fantasy worlds that don't hate trans people. Stop being an ass, Michael.
@transworld I never knew how bad she was.
Btw, interesting thing, the onion made some joke that because she hated trans, the right wing is okay with wizardry now or something like that.
Honestly... though, as a kid i would never have imagined she had such hate in her heart. It's really such a shame that people with her wealth have such darkness in them.
