Gamedev and visual effects people, what software do you use for asset tracking?

Like, how do you track notes and progress of say, a vehicle, when it gets passed along from discipline to discipline. Modeling, lookdev, rigging, animation, and so on?

@apq We've been using ftrack for years. Occasionally, however, what I as a TD see as its speed and ease of use is regarded as frustrating limitations by people who... how shall I put it... have absorbed Shotgrid's way of doing things.

We use ftrack as a database for notes, status and metadata tracking though. We're not letting it launch our DCCs or move our published files around (in other words, we have custom publishing tools that call their API and are not using their "connect" framework).

@compfu Sounds exactly like how we used it at my previous job.
I think it's interface is too different from anything else out there, UX-wise. It felt like the Zbrush of tracking tools 🙈 Shotgrid isn't much better.
My poll was prompted by the frustration at my current studio where we work on game assets and we're using Jira for asset tracking, which is an unfortunate seat that we've put ourselves in, for reasons.
I'm curious if there's anything else out there worth testing, for our next project.
@apq Hard to tell if the interface is too different. For artists it is really neat with their focus on the Kanban-type task boards. I think they made some weird UI choices for sure (trying to look fancy and animated when you just want a speedy database frontend).
@apq Kitsu ofc
@genco I've seen it mentioned before! I like how clean it looks.
How are you using it? For games or vfx? What's great about it and what's not so great? 🙂

@apq Live action VFX also for game trailers both for full CG and cinematics.

Its super simple and intuitive as UX design, when we have a revolving door due to many reasons. It becomes the best tracker out there to onboard people quickly.

Its free if you host it yourself which is great, and zou back end makes it possible that you do anything you want with it. However it can become super complex the moment you start adding to it.

@apq Allegedly, we're using ShoeGum Production Tracking, or whatever Autodesk is calling it this week.

In reality...

@yantor3d @apq The only pathway left is for them to use the letter X in some way.
