Re-watching #TheWizardOfOz movie for the first time in years, I kept an eye out for the transition from black-and-white to colour.
It is quite clever and low tech. It's not an in-camera effect. It's not a film splice, or done via printing.
It's very simply a double dressed in a black-and-white version of the Dorothy costume, in a low light, back to the camera, and opening a black-and-white door, who steps out of shot for the coloured-costume Garland Dorothy to step back into shot and pass through the door.
There are some slight differences in the costume, in the lines of some of the folds, that give this away.
One can also just about make out the trap door that the WWOTW drops through in order to disappear in a cloud of smoke and flame from Munchkin City.
Hollywood poured billions into AI tools in 2025, betting on generative magic from OpenAI, Google and startups like Asteria.
