Having worked in retail for many years, I am 1000 percent against people bringing their dogs with them into any store. Leave your dog at home. It doesn't matter how well behaved they are, some minimum wage worker is eventually going to have to clean up after your pet when they shit or piss somewhere in the store.
I wonder if this is as prevalent in other parts of the country as it is in LA. Everyone here seems to have decided they *must* bring their dog everywhere with them

@MLE_online idk if it's cultural but I imagine more people bring their dogs on errands because of the weather, but also probably the culture because people would need to be walking more

I've seen it but more often in the south and still honestly not that often.

@MultimediaMage yea, im sure it's too annoying to bring a pet if it's raining or snowing.

@MLE_online And who's walking if it's raining or snowing?

ehhh I guess you could drive them, don't want your seat wet with canine

@MultimediaMage well yea, people here aren't walking their dogs to the store. they are putting them in the SUV and driving them, and then taking them in the store with them
@MLE_online Wild, like nothnx to that hassle
@MLE_online @MultimediaMage OK that is weird. I have often wished I could get an errand in with a dog walk, but I would never. There's basically only two I can really do - return library books (there's a drop off slot on the outside of the building) and buy wine (there's a liquor store a good dog-walk distance away where they love dogs and have a photo wall of customers' dogs).

@MLE_online @MultimediaMage ...and I've seen plenty of dogs tied up outside a shop while their person is inside getting something - some of the dogs seem fine with it but I know mine would not be.

But, people bringing their dogs with them, on purpose, to do errands and not even get a walk in? That just seems like inconveniencing yourself by choice for nothing. It seems like it's not a thing where I live, I can't think of ever having seen it.

@dragonfrog @MLE_online The only thing I can think of is I've met people who say their dogs go bazonkers on their house when left alone.
@MultimediaMage @dragonfrog i went on a few dates with a guy who had a dog like that. he did not pay enough attention to her and im pretty sure i could have fixed her
@MLE_online @dragonfrog I was gonna say, yeah, it's a whole different issue.
@MLE_online @dragonfrog Chiming back with "I could fix her" only applies to pets.
@MLE_online it definitely is where I live.
@MLE_online here in NH I only really see that in places like Lowe's and Tractor Supply Company and it's not even that common. Quite rare to see dogs in other stores here.
@clinstid I see it in the hardware store a lot (and had to clean up my fair share of dog poop in home depot when i worked there), but I also see it in the grocery store a lot now
@MLE_online a lot of the stores that have food around here have signs that say "service dogs only".
@clinstid but no one enforces it! and people can just go on amazon and buy a fake service dog vest for their unruly mutt
@MLE_online yeah, I can't blame people working at the stores for not trying to enforce it though. Not worth getting in an argument over what a service dog really is. 🤦
@clinstid yea, this is just a symptom of a deeper rot in our me-first culture
@MLE_online Certainly some neighborhoods in Chicago are full of dog lovers (predictably the richer, younger ones), but generally I think it’s still a minority of establishments that will allow them.

@MLE_online Austin is awful about this. Unless it's a service dog who's well-trained to be chill in public, don't! Please don't. I always feel terrible as someone who wants to be nice to peoples' pets, but who tends to be scared of (and super lick-averse with) to dogs who like to jump and lick.

Plus, people with legit phobias of dogs out there don't expect to see dogs in non-explicitly-dog-friendly spaces. It's just rude?

@stefthepef it is rude! and also, dogs are rarely as well behaved as their owners think they are, and get in fights with other dogs in stores, or bark or nip at other customers

@MLE_online yeah, that's not good for the dog, either :(

just crappy behavior for everyone involved

@stefthepef @MLE_online 💯💯💯

The only places I find it acceptable are pet stores and the occasional Home Depot/Lowes run. Outside of that, keep your pets at home ffs.

@austincnunn @stefthepef I have personally cleaned up dog shit inside of home depot when i worked there, so I am against that, too.

I also worked at petco and I'm against dogs coming in there as well because one dog will piss on the shelf of chew toys, then another one comes in and smells it and pisses there, too, and then every dog coming in the store does it, and then the employees have to deal with boxes of stuff covered in piss

@MLE_online @stefthepef I’m only OK with those places because corporate allows (and encourages) it. So I don’t necessarily blame the dog owners for bringing them.

I absolutely blame the dog owners for not training and picking up after their dog, though.

@austincnunn I don't think home depot and lowe's encourage people to bring their dogs. They were not allowed in home depot stores when i worked there, but no one in charge wanted to tell customers no and get yelled at

Pet stores do though. But still, even if it's encouraged but someone has a poorly trained dog, they should not be bringing their dog places.

@MLE_online Maybe it’s not corporate wide (I just assumed based on local stores), but the HDs and Lowe’s here both have decently sized signs up on the doors saying dogs are allowed.

@austincnunn it's also possible that policies have changed since i worked there.

I'm still against people taking their dogs in the hardware store. It makes some sense for them to go to the pet store, but there's no reason someone needs to take their dog with them while they go shopping for water heaters or lumber

@austincnunn @MLE_online soooooo many people need to realize their dog is not fit for public places
@MLE_online It's extremely common and annoying in Ventura County.
@jlamoree that's basically LA though!
@MLE_online Them's fightin' words.
@jlamoree lol. i like ventura, but it's gotten and is still getting LA-ified
@MLE_online it's obnoxiously common in Seattle.
@dr_a Seattle and LA are a blight
@MLE_online hey now, at least we have nice coffee and pretty mountains.
@dr_a y'all's coffee is too strong, too burnt, too fancy, and too expensive. The mountains are nice though
@MLE_online
Agreed! We were never as bold with our daughters as many with their dogs. No, we didn’t muzzle them from screaming in the yard but it didn’t take long for us to remind them that they weren’t treasured for their ear-splitting ambiance…
@MLE_online I see it a LOT over here. And about half have fake 'service dog' vests.
@MLE_online It's insane up here. Dogs in grocery stores all the time. Sometimes the owners make an effort to put a fake service dog sign on them. (I love dogs, just not in my groceries).
@stoneymonster i dont want them in any stores, but especially not in a grocery store
@MLE_online indeed! People seem to at least respect the farmers' markets (mostly) for whatever reason. Although I do see a tiny dog in a shoulder bag from time to time.
@MLE_online I think people mostly don't bring dogs into stores here in Chicago unless its a pet store that has a sign that says pets are welcome, and even then I think it is a little unusual. However since the pandemic started I generally avoid going to stores so I don't really have a good read on what the current cultural norms are for these things. I've heard people have gotten a bit more feral since 2019.

@aeva It's sooo much worse since the pandemic.

Chicago is the promised land! I have to move there

@MLE_online it’s pretty danged common everywhere i’ve travelled in the states in the last three or four years
@MLE_online Even in Vienna, famous for loving dogs more than children, you can't bring dogs to most stores. Definitely not grocery stores (probably forbidden by law), most do have hooks to hook the leash onto in front of the entrance, and "no dogs" signs.
