Would love to see if there is a bigger #permaculture community here - left #meta and co two months ago for #upscrolled and since it’s still a smaller platform I’d love to see what’s being discussed regarding #soilhealth, #syntropicagroforestry etc. Always happy to link up and talk about practices this growing season in this climate deteriorating through #war and #exploitation of resources.
@shorooq I'm into natural farming & getting more into xeriscaping/climate action gardening. I'm on Southern Vancouver Island & heavily involved in food security, food systems & rewilding.
@PhoenixSerenity that sounds amazing! I didn’t know that word before but what I’m doing here is a combination of that (I guess, I just really don’t want to irrigate all summer hahah) with Syntropic tree lines and mulch filled swales and act as a bit of a sponge (we’re on a hill but swales alone make no sense because we don’t get that much precipitation)
@PhoenixSerenity just saw your bio and as a chronically ill person myself I see so much appeal in these systems - I’m more likely to have energy in bursts to care for a system and combine plants strategically than I would for a tillage system that needs weeding and irrigagation regularly, but idk if that was a factor for you as well
@shorooq I'm an older woman with physical disability & do low impact gardening. The good thing is that natural gardening doesn't burn my body out & it boosts biodiversity 😊
I'm seeking more plants that are drought resistant for near future. Like you, I want to be strategic & reduce needs of watering & weeding. I'm in midst of longterm project to remove backyard lawn & filling it with edible plants mixed in with native plants.
@shorooq that high-level discussion is great. But I’m more focused on just ways to keep deer out of my cabbage.😁
@Crow hahah the only reason I ended up in that high level discussion is cause my area is so devoid of livable space for wildlife that I need to bring the deer back before I can worry about my cabbages. I’d even accept a rabbit to start 🥹
How do you keep your cabbages safe though ?

@shorooq I don’t have too much trouble with rabbits because I have a prey-focused dog. My main garden has a deer fence.

Truth be told, my cabbages haven’t done well in the past for other reasons. This year looks much more promising.

@shorooq
hei.
we are into #permaculture on the #polarcircle in #lapland.. cultivating good soil will be a challange 😂 we collect horse and alpaka shit from the neighbourhood🤞
@pocketvj that sounds like a pretty good challenge! Do the neighbors give it to you freely or do you have to go on the fields?
Where I am cows are rarely brought into stables for the winter so very few people have any manure to spare

@shorooq
we get it for free, they dont know where to put it and are happy someone takes it 😅
did you actualy ask some of the farmers around you?

150km around our place, no one is farming anymore... food gets imported from spain+south america.
i beleive there will come need for foodproducers like us 🤞, all money goes into tourism right now 🤷

@pocketvj yesss, all of our neighbors farm so I just asked them directly - they said I can always go onto meadows and collect it outdoors but for our 1 acre field that seems like a lot 🥴
@shorooq
maybe breed some chicken...😉
@pocketvj I fear the dogs would love that idea too much but I’ve been considering turkeys actually (ideally runner ducks but they’re not much bigger than chicken)
@shorooq
I suspect, but haven't verified, that there are probably people posting about it under solarpunk tags on this platform.
@chocobo13 sorry im super new here, could you explain what that means? What are solarpunk tags ?
@shorooq
Specifically, thinking you might find relevant stuff under #solarpunk, which is used by a community of people looking to take current tech and ideas, and find ways to make them sustainable, and use them to uplift communities, in proper punk spirit. It also refers to a genre of fiction exploring similar ideals
@chocobo13 thank you so much! That’s really quite ingenious, from having lots of contact with decolonial scholarship and Quijano’s colonial matrix of power (it essentially states that all elements of life need to be targeted and have been affected by colonialism so to decolonize the web needs to be undone at all nodes) I absolutely love seeing this in action
#decolonization

@shorooq hi! There's a big, active, and very friendly gardening community here, so some of them will overlap with your specific interests. #gardening and #compost are pretty active. Not sure about your specific hashtags, so you might have more luck with those more general ones.

How has your experience on Upscrolled been, overall? I just learned about it.

@shorooq Have found mastodon a bit quiet on the #permaculture hashtag. Nice to meet you! Doing our best here to live with slow food and zero food miles.

@shorooq I hope you're finding good connections through hashtags! There are a lot of really great accounts on here doing Permaculture, foraging, etc. Good luck!
