Progress today with #Proxmox on my #OptiPlex micro.. I can access the GUI from my laptop using the wired network and created a test VM. ✅

..and my #Sonoff kit arrived and seems solid. 🥳

My problem now is to get internet connectivity because I am using a mobile hotspot. The OptiPlex has WiFi (USB and possibly internally) but I can't configure them without internet access (to get required packages).

I need to share internet from the laptop and setup routing on the micro.

You will eventually learn that #Proxmox is openly hostile to WiFi. Just. Don't. Bother.

You might think about some cheap router running OpenWRT. It can pick up the WiFi from the mobile hotspot and work as a wired internet gateway for your Proxmox server (and other wired devices too).

@robertdahlem thanks for the tip, I'll put one in order!
@happyborg
What I forgot to mention: you will need to enable Masquerading on the Wifi side, otherwise there will be no connection with the internet.

@robertdahlem Thanks for opening up the Proxmox wormhole into the portal of #OpenWRT! I'll be back for more tech support soonish [kidding].

I had no idea about this (or Proxmox) a few days ago. I've been transported back into my teens (70's) and having a lot of fun, which is what I wanted when I sat down and thought, hmm using Home Automation to monitor humidity might be fun, (and useful during renovation which is a long difficult project.)

P.S. also a dog slave.

@robertdahlem Obviously I wasn't kidding 😆.

Can you save me research time by answering what if any features an #OpenWRT router will need for my application?

That's ability to connect to my WiFi hotspot and provide a local wired network with internet, including a connected Linux system (ie Proxmox).

Anything else I might want to look for if it doesn't bump price much? I see the 'One' is £150 while cheapest OpenWRT routers on eBay are < £50.

As an OpenWRT router does not run crappy software, your only risk would be crappy hardware.

You mentioned £ so I guess you're living in the UK. Nice pieces of hardware are built by GL.iNet (yes, the name is crappy). The GL-MT3000 is a nice and sturdy product, I own one. It is sold for £75 on Amazon UK and I saw one at Ebay UK too for £55. It already has two Ethernet ports, so if you have only two devices you don't even need a switch.

@happyborg
Make sure you update the software to an original OpenWRT before you start configuring it.
