Only three articles in today's #Hackster round-up, the last of the week.

First, a presentation from @fosdem by @olimex unveiling the Olimex-HoT, Home-of-Things - a low-cost single-board computer designed to serve as the heart of a smart home installation, using #OpenWRT to create a server that can run in just 128MB of RAM (and 128MB of storage) - now there's a fix for the AI-bubble's memory hunger!

Tsvetan Usunov Plans a €20 Open Source Smart Home Server Solution: Meet the Olimex-HoT

Having found platforms like Home Assistant too resource-hungry, Usunov has come up with something lighter — built around OpenWRT.

My first #OpenWRT test didn't go well. I've used #DDWRT for years. It's mostly fine. Needs periodic reboots. VLANs aren't stable sometimes.

I tried flashing OpenWRT onto my Nighthawk today. Seemed to mostly work OK. I logged in, got antennas activated. Then weirdness started. From a LAN wired connection, the gaming computer would get 2-5 minutes of uptime, then the whole port shut downs. Restart and it would be OK. Then 2-5 minutes later the port shuts down. Orange light. Full stop.

I went to all the trouble of setting up a "lab" router/net inside my "prod" router/net.

Now I think that lab net is about to become my VPN'd net.

Gotta decide who/what is going to serve as DHCP/DNS in each.

We're so close I feel so excited - often my advocacy is earnest discussion of the dangers of proprietary software which is important, but in this exuberance I am moved by the positive! I want more support of the GPL to do more fun things with our devices! I want to continue so we can do more building like we did with the #OpenWrt One (those shiny devices? all freedom respecting!)

@pid_eins super interesting. At @ffhl had been brainstorming with @cuechan a while back how one could provision an #OpenWrt based #Freifunk VM. Hadn't heard of #smbios before, but that seems elegant. On the other hand, it would also be interesting to provision an #OpenWrt WLAN router. For that the only option is a USB stick, I guess? Is systemd planing to add USB provisioning support? Is there a recommended/existing (file/filesystem) format for USB provisioning?
@peachfiend they run some custom version, but I think stock #openwrt is supported also.
@peachfiend maybe something from gl-inet? They are #openwrt based: https://store-us.gl-inet.com/collections/home-routers
