Back in ye olde days (like when I was a nipper) kids didn't go in pubs. God I'm old.

Should kids be banned in pubs? Stylist argues not

When journalist Alexandra Jones found out her local pub was banning children, she wasn't impressed. Here's why she thinks kids should be allowed in pubs.

@ianbetteridge I think it depends a lot on the type of pub and the time of day.
@mansr I have fond memories of having to sit outside :)
@ianbetteridge @mansr Except "outside" is now all Car Park.

@ianbetteridge I remember a few kids bored out of their minds in a smoke filled pub on a Friday evening because the parents wanted to get out. Very well behaved but it was completely unfair on the kids.

There are pubs with playgrounds out back. I’d argue they’re more a restaurant with a bar. So there are some places it’s certainly appropriate but as a whole it doesn’t seem wise.

@ianbetteridge I think she's got a good point about how some people are weirdly hostile to children in general, but I agree that drinking establishments not allowing children is probably the norm, not an affront to parenthood.
@ianbetteridge at the rate at which local pubs are closing down, it's a bold but probably shortsighted move to start excluding customers. When my kids were younger, meeting friends with young kids in the pub felt like a joyous taste of pre-parenting life again.

@ianbetteridge

Your childhood, as mine, falls into a rather narrow window, historically speaking.

Children were only banned from the bar areas (specifically) of pubs in 1908. It wasn't until 1872 that people were even prohibited from selling spirits to them.

After two reports in 1972 and 1973 recommended the idea, Children's Certificates were introduced in 1990 (Scotland) and 1995 (England and Wales) letting them back in again if a certificate were applied for and granted.

For a painful historical sense of how long ago this was and how many people have grown up with the expectation that (accompanied) children in pub bars is once again normal: Michael Portillo was still in government at the time. (-:

Children Act 1908

@ianbetteridge Right! We sat in the pub steps with a bag of salt and vinegar crisps and a pickled egg and bummed No. 6s from any who paused on the way in.

@ianbetteridge Pubs were dark, strange, magical and weirdly smelling places that you could only get glimpses of the inside back in the olden days

Terrible generalisation, but in Europe kids fit into the adult world. UK and Ireland feels like it’s the other way around. Parents expect the world to fit around their children. So I can see why some places would do that here.
