I was almost convinced that a #cargobike would solve our transport issue, with the kid still hating the car and buses.

I just looked up maximum weight limits for cargo bikes, the page I found said 100kg, and I'm 85kg and the kid is 52kg (and growing). 🙁

Well, it was a nice thought.

Maaaaybe a tandem bike, in the far future. Again, it's going to hinge on both the kid and I finishing the process of learning to ride, and then saving enough money.

Til then, his life remains "within walking distance of our house".

I really wish we moved somewhere else. 😔

Ok, still regretting living in a bleak car-friendly child-hostile suburb, but looks like some ebikes should have higher capacity.

This website I referred to wasn't very clear. Possibly it's poorly translated

@seawall this would be a great question to ask #BikeNite and/or #BikeTooter

My cargo bike is capable of carrying 500 lbs / ~225 kg, not sure where you got that info from but it may not be right?

@clhenrick @seawall That's what I was thinking too. People use cargo bikes to carry some seriously hefty cargo, 100kg seems light.

I mean, my (adult-sized unmotorized) kick scooter says 100kg.

@seawall How about a cargo bike plus trailer? I've seen some pretty grunty ones out there.

@seawall Is that total weight (including the rider) or just the cargo weight? There seems to be a range of carrying capacity depending on the type of cargo bike see eg https://www.bicyclejunction.co.nz/pages/faq-how-much-will-it-carry and their range of models includes options with up to 3 kids' seats.

Could be worth talking to them (or in Christchurch with https://christchurchelectricbicycles.co.nz/collections/cargo-bikes ) about your requirements to see what options they recommend.

FAQ: How much weight can cargo bikes carry?

In general here are the various load capacities by type. Often your legs will hold the key to whether these loads are achievable. 100kg in the cargo bay takes a bit of power to wind up. Utility Bike: Front rack - 10/15kg, Rear rack - Around 35kg. Mid-tail: Front rack - Around 20kg, Rear rack - Around 65kg. Longtail: 20

@zeborah it seemed to say total weight, but you know what, it was kind of vague. The site looked legit but... Maybe it was ghost-written by AI.

I'm gonna be cross if I just spend most of the past hour crying over AI misinfo

@seawall @zeborah I strongly suggest finding an actual bike shop and asking. The normal limit is how much the rider can hold upright when they stop, especially with e-assist bikes being so common these days.

There definitely is a wide range too. Omnium used to be (in)famous for the 30kg limit on the front rack of their bikes (and they were serious, the head tubes failed), Harry Vs Larry warranty up to 180kg of cargo. Check manufacturer websites! https://larryvsharry.com/products/original-classic

Original Classic

@seawall I have had two Larry vs. Harry cargo bikes. Has max. weight of 180kg. I ride regularly with ¾ max and have gone over max a few times. Other than the feel of the extra mass, it handles and brakes well at capacity. Highly recommend.
@seawall I have to assume they mean 100kg plus rider, not including. The Yuba Kombi (for example) is a small, not very heavy duty long tail and has a 200kg limit (including the rider)
