@ferrix @ProPublica yup. its primary purpose is to elicit pressure on the interviewee.
@P__X @ProPublica I might suggest its effect is as a free-throw for the prosecution. If the suspect passes the poly oh well it's not perfect. If they fail it then they're obviously guilty.

@ferrix @ProPublica yup, but here, the polygraph serves the defense. the test is like stand-your-ground laws it gives an egde to people who experience no remorse, have no empathy and thus no emotional responses to moral conundrums...i.e. sociopaths. just looking at some published data, the positive predictive value is 48% even in what I'd consider a non-representative cohort...
