JOHN COLTRANE
Kulu SĆ© Mama
1966 U.S. Stereo pressing

Time for Trane.

One could argue it’s ALWAYS time for Trane.

Kulu is the LAST Coltrane album to be released during his lifetime, and Love Supreme aside, my favorite of his.

I’ve always found it to be incredibly forward thinking. I could picture some hipster #NoiseRock band from Brooklyn making this today, and other hipster beard scratchers screaming from the tops of buildings how good it is.

It’s trance-inducing, interstellar sounding, yet really bright and accessible too.

It’s three songs were pieced together from three different studio sessions from ā€˜65, one of which (ā€œWelcomeā€) would appear on Santana’s 1973 album of the same name.

Kulu SĆ© Mama is an album to get absolutely lost in. Every time I hear it, I unlock something new, something that seemingly wasn’t there before.

It is just astonishing, & I’m always happy to put it on.

@TheVinylApe

This recording session started the day after I was born. Coincidence? Unlikely. ;^)
