@davej Our chickenshit government strikes again. WHY Abstain? More coercion from the USA and Israel? Australia no longer stands for decency, and has buried its principles.
The land of the fair go has become the land of bugger off.

@Tooden Who knows?

Our own human rights record isn’t exactly stellar, though, even if it’s been nearly a century since genocide was official policy. For quite some time, now, the government’s scrambled to sweep adverse findings under the carpet whenever Amnesty or UNHCR come calling. Maybe their softly-softly approach seeks to draw attention away from Australia’s own failures?

Or maybe the Orange Turdstain’s surreptitiously decreed that today’s quota of spittle remains to be licked?

@davej Very true. Apartheid never died...it just went underground. We have a smear of decency spread over everything, that occasionally has to be replenished. I have to admit that I was fooled. Hopium is a strong drug.
@Tooden @davej Belgium being led by a far-right party also abstained. Probably because it would otherwise mean we might need to pay reparations for what we did to Congo.
@davej .. well aren't we shit then.. but I guess to be expected that our own failure like voting 'No' is in line with that outcome. Do we really need AUKUS that much, -Very- crap if that is the case.

@erstwhile I don’t know if it’s *the* reason, but FWIW, we do need AUKUS. We’re over a barrel. Our navy in particular relies on interoperability with US systems, but it’s an issue across all our defence forces.

That doesn’t excuse our spinelessness at the UN, though.

@davej another arewethebaddies.jpg for the entire western bloc

You just know they'll go back to legalizing slavery the moment they feel like they can

@xri Or bringing it back onshore, in any case. In the interim, there are plenty of competitive banana republics in which to minimise labour costs.
@davej Canada abstained? Wtf!

@feisty_lemming Yeah. I’ll give the Canadian government the benefit of the doubt—I hope whatever concessions this vote bought are worth them.

If they’re doing it for free, though, they’re evil *and* stupid.
