As for Filtr pricing, it seems the consensus is that a subscription is good as long as there’s a one-time purchase alternative, so I think I’ll go for that!

@mipstian is the next stable the release of filtr 👀

Big fan of lifetime purchases. I always go for those tbh

@ashah I hope so but it depends on Apple now. I wanted to ship it in October lol
@mipstian 😔 assuming they accept the next release I mean?
@ashah nah app review didn’t seem to be an issue, there’s just too many bugs on the os side
@mipstian I’d pay that just for the joy Tatami has given my son and I.
@mipstian Be careful of setting your lifetime purchase price too low. I listened to a lot about it on @atpfm. I want to see you succeed and Wipr stick around for the foreseeable future.
@ddlevine @atpfm I’ve heard a lot of wildly different suggestions since yesterday 😅 what’s low?
@mipstian @ddlevine @atpfm I guess a lifetime price shouldn’t be less than 3 years of subscription
@CyberSaloperie @ddlevine @atpfm yeah even I was going for 5-6x, but some users suggested 10 or 12 which threw me off

@mipstian @CyberSaloperie @ddlevine Honestly, I don't think there's any need for an app that needs continuous updates to have a one-time-purchase option.

It's unreasonable to expect that a developer will invest continuous work, forever, for no additional money.

Enough people will subscribe for ongoing value. You don't need to sell yourself short to please the handful who won’t.

@marcoarment @CyberSaloperie @ddlevine I don’t even think I would be selling myself short tbh, I might be dead in 6 years for all I know 😅 Or we might not have iPhones anymore. There’s definitely still gonna be ads tho
@mipstian @marcoarment @CyberSaloperie @ddlevine maybe worth deciding how long you want to support this version of the app and setting a one-time purchase that way? Like customers can expect ?-number of years, but when Wipr 3 is released then they'll have to purchase the new version if they want updates. And doesn't necessarily need to be a better value than if they had done a yearly subscription...
@YourPalMichael @marcoarment @CyberSaloperie @ddlevine I think two Wiprs was enough for a lifetime 🫠
@mipstian @marcoarment @CyberSaloperie @ddlevine i agree with Marco. don't sell yourself short. but also don't overshoot haha, there's a fine line.
@mipstian I think the lifetime purchase price that’s equal to a year is low. I’m not an expert, but I think the lifetime purchase price should not be so low that people instantly choose it. It should be something where someone paying it gives you enough money to sustain development. If people automatically choose it over a subscription, it’s probably too low.
@ddlevine oh ok yeah I’m bad at this stuff but not that bad, it was gonna be a multiple ofc

@mipstian sorry, probably stupid question.

Will the one-time purchase of Filtr during beta transfer to the public release, when it comes out?

@graychev I’ll try to fix that this time 😅 so no if I do my job right

@mipstian Giving both options would be nice! I agree the lifetime subscription shouldn’t be priced too low.

But playing devil’s advocate: Mastodon followers likely understand development costs and want to support developers, am less certain about general public.
Also, BigTech uses differential pricing across countries. For example, in India, $50 can get 2 years of Apple One, ~3 years of Prime, or ~2.5 years of evil video site premium which is significantly cheaper than what you get elsewhere.

@mipstian I’d happily pay $9.99 - that’s my current pain point for value before I start cobbling together some wild custom solution to the problem I’m trying to solve. ;) A sub is very reasonable for a service that requires a backend and continual admin.

@mipstian to piggyback off this I think flighty does 5x lifetime subscription. I always thought that was fair.

So it’s the price of five years. I’ve actually recouped that though since I’ve been using it since 2019.
