@js @marcoarment Right! What do you do with all those? I keep mine, drives my wife absolutely bonkers. š
Maybe John has room in his attic? (Iām sure someone has already said that.)
@jarrod @marcoarment @matt_birchler This is actually discussed in the ATP podcast. As a nerd who is in way out of his depth, I found the discussion fascinating. Recommend.
ATP #683
@jarrod @bubbajet @marcoarment FWIW Overcast does have local transcription built in, but it's slower and way more processor intensive than having a transcript ready to go right away.
Takes about 2 minutes of maxing out my iPhone 17 Pro to generate one for an hour+ episode, and even longer on older phones.
Also, Overcast supports iOS 18, which can not use this local transcription, so doing it sever-side gives those users the feature as well, which is nice.
@connor_g @matt_birchler @jarrod @bubbajet And given how long it takes, it can't be reliably done in the background, so it's a poor user experience to NEED to transcribe every episode manually before you can use transcript features.
It also restricts features like search.
@codecaffeine @marcoarment I saw a bunch of episodes that āshouldā have had transcripts ready for me but didnāt last week, but things seem to be better this week. Iām guessing the backend is getting better at itā¦
Having the button to generate local transcripts is fantastic, particularly as a backup, but itās not really "magicā.
As part of the intro to each episode of his Daily Source Code, Adam Curry plays a very cool sound clip. A Hispanic voice asks āTransmitters? We donāt need no stinking transmitters!ā For some reason this little phrase makes me laugh to myself each time that I hear it.
@gnb @morphorod @marcoarment A crap one thatās funny to a niche crossover audience that also doesnāt mind someone being a bit of a dick to someone youād expect to feel like a peer.
But some people like cheap digs at the expense of others because they donāt agree on the reasons for a different approach.
