Two continents. One strong partnership 🇪🇺🤝🇦🇺

After almost a decade of work, we concluded the EU–Australia Free Trade Agreement. A win on both sides.

The agreement will:
🌍 boost EU exports to Australia, with growth of 33% expected over the next decade
🌍 save €1 billion in tariffs
🌍 create new opportunities for businesses and farmers
🌍 strengthen cooperation on critical raw materials, security and defence, and research

A relationship built for the long term.

@EUCommission More free trade agreements with repressive regimes. Yay.
@elricofmelnibone @EUCommission Yay, more big aggro industrie !
EU is so saving everybody.
@elricofmelnibone Australia is a repressive regime? @EUCommission
@nitrml @elricofmelnibone @EUCommission Well, we’re basically a petro-state controlled by mining companies. There’s a strong illusion of being a real country - which is nice I guess.

@elricofmelnibone @EUCommission

Calling Australia, Rank 11 on the global democracy index, an "oppressive regime" makes me think you don't really know what the word "regime" means.

Perhaps, @[email protected] meant the following:

  • For the existential threat to Indigenous people, most importantly Aboriginals?
  • For the lack of affirmative action in the country compared to some European countries?
  • For the lack of representation of the Torres Strait Islander and aboriginals, particularly melanated, on state-owned media outlets save NITV (Indigenous TV) and seldomly SBS. This deprivation is a true reflection of the representation of First Nations people in government.
  • etc
Yes, we are in the 11th position. Notwithstanding, the democracy is a government of NOT (all) the people, by NOT (all) the people and for NOT (all) the people:

@ABT554 Age verification. Social media crackdowns. Hate speech laws that are insanely broad in scope. IIRC there's also a weird ebike thing going on?

Not to mention the apalling treatment of many indigenous people.

Yeah, a true beacon of freedom.

@elricofmelnibone @EUCommission By what source or metric is Australia a "repressive regime"?
@elricofmelnibone @EUCommission what kind of metric have you used to determine that?
@EUCommission As an EU/Aus dual citizen, I'm excited for this! There's still a lot of untapped potential in the things we have in common.
Thanks for the support, @wansti! 🇪🇺 🤝 🇦🇺
@wansti I agree 😁 my son lives in Sydney with his children. I must say I am very pleased with this move and shall have my first vacation there next year 😍
@connynasch @wansti
Welcome!
You should all drop around for a BBQ.

@EUCommission But this can't be right because our politicians said the "nasty EU" wouldn't let the UK trade with the Commonwealth.....so we had to have the utterly destructive suicide mission called Brexit....

...it couldn't be these politicians were lying for their own ends could it?

@EUCommission

Is this still part of the trade deal?

"Australians may be able to live and work freely in the EU under a two-way mobility scheme put forward by Brussels. The same options would be open to EU citizens looking to move to Australia.

NewsWire understands the scheme was offered as a “sweetener” to get Canberra over the line on an elusive free-trade deal."

@Gina from what I'm reading it's probably not a part of it. There's just some limited stuff about recognizing qualifications in there and if they had agreed on such broad freedom of mobility it would likely be highlighted by the announcements.

@EUCommission

@EUCommission That is nice and all, but I still don't see Digital Omnibus repeled and still see the push for #ChatControl 1.0

@EUCommission Yeah, the farmers are delighted, and so are the ecologists. The planet needs people eating less beef and lamb/mutton, not more.

European Commission

@Kerplunk Nothing better than all your traffic with an official EU site being intercepted by a private American company.

Didn't one of those recently say that they can't guarantee not giving all your data to the government if asked?

@EUCommission and all of that just to be more accepted at the Eurovision Song Contest...

@olbohlen @EUCommission

Aussies playing the long game, counting them points.

@EUCommission Get Australia to join the EU. Call it Earth Union and we'll save a ton from not having to redo the logos and the merchandise.
@EUCommission Any arbitration rules in the agreement where both the EU laws as wel as Australian laws have been totally ruled out?
@EUCommission This is good news. Tho not perfect, as it's focused on the utility of people as objecfs rather than allowing people to move between the two states freely as humans, regardless of profession.

Great! Let's do China now.
EC is not afraid to make Trump angry, is it??

@EUCommission

@EUCommission Yeah, one of our biggest trade partners went completely bonkers. You know them, so I don't think I need to name them. We'd be glad to work together with you guys. I'm happy we found some common ground and a mutually beneficial agreement.
@EUCommission what does the 'research' side of the agreement entail? Will Australia join the Horizon Europe research framework?
Hello @severin!
The Free Trade Agreement between Australia and the EU at this point will make it easier for researchers to move between the two continents. For the future, the parties have also agreed to launch formal negotiations for the association of Australia to Horizon Europe.

@EUCommission Ok. I know. Eurosong.
@EUCommission Go go EU! 🇪🇺⭐
@EUCommission Speaking as an Australian, I'm delighted! As a "middle power" the more we move away from alignment with the US, and towards alignment with the EU, the better.
