I got laid off on Monday. They offered me 5 weeks severance after 8 1/2 years. I was given 24 hours to bring in my laptop, and 48 hours to sign the severance agreement or risk getting just two weeks (illegal). I wrote answered with what I’d like as far as severance goes (much more) what the law stipulates, and didn’t sign of course. They wrote me back very sweetly with an 8 week offer, but I’m countering with more. We’ll see what happens next
Thanks everyone, I’ll keep you all updated
Hey so they’re turning down my 12 week request and insisting on 8. I’m countering with 10 tomorrow
@patrickworld Pretty unbelievable that after 8+ years they'd try to go with a mere *5 weeks*. Good luck!
#BREAKING Final severance package after 8+ years...8 weeks pay. Thanks for nothing fuckers. Signed, sealed, delivered, up yours
@patrickworld OOF. nasty business on their part. I hope you get something better soon, they didn't deserve you πŸ«‚
@patrickworld as I say to my son when someone fucks us over, they can eat a whole bag of butts.

@patrickworld

Shitty.

I think I heard I could only expect 2 weeks per year at most, so like 5 months per decade is "considered" top pay.

Obviously most companies probably try and get away with less.

Thanks for all those years and go die you scum employee.

Shitty!

@patrickworld only 8 weeks?  yeah, fuck them. hope you find something better quick!
@patrickworld that’s appalling. Hope you find something much better soon!
@patrickworld WTF?! Here they get more than that after 12 months. That's horrendous.
@patrickworld
Oh, shit.
I hope you will suceed and find a much better job! πŸ€
@patrickworld Crap, Patrick. I’m so sorry to hear this. I hope you get what you need and are able to find a better employer.
@patrickworld sorry for this, good luck getting a better offer (of jobs and severance) β™₯️

@patrickworld I wish you all the luck in your search for a job.

your former employer sucks

@patrickworld Oof, terrible news. I am so sorry.
@patrickworld
I’m sorry to hear this. Good for you for pushing back! I hope you soon find a job that better respects your talents.

@patrickworld

EIGHT WEEKS.

Back in the day I remember my dad keeping records in a tiny notebook of who "retired" and what they got. There was never no eight weeks. And THAT was considered bein' done dirty.

@patrickworld shit, I’m sorry to hear this. Thank goodness you know your rights, go get them!
@patrickworld Damn. Stick to your guns. Typically, a severance package reflects one month for every year worked. Accepting means you can't seek any legal action against them. Sorry to hear of this.

@patrickworld oh no, how awful of them, glad you know your value & rights.

Good luck with everything.

@patrickworld Shit, I’m sorry to hear that. I hope things turn around for you soon.
@patrickworld oh no - sorry to hear that and hearing that the company values your long service and loyalty so poorly is appalling.

@satsuma @patrickworld

Depending on his economic circumstances, he may have enjoyed the blessing. The economy right now is pretty scary, but in other times, people can now often end up in a place where they are actually very thankful they were given an opportunity to look elsewhere.

@GhostOnTheHalfShell @patrickworld no consultation period and only five weeks redundancy pay is an insult after eight years of service though.

@patrickworld

I can only hope that you can later savior the experience of them asking you to come back as a contractor.

And you can kick back with your favorite beverage for relaxing you contemplate just how you’ll decide and terms you’ll demand

@patrickworld Good luck! I’m rooting for you and hope you get a fair severance package.

@patrickworld

Good luck! Make sure you're being advised by someone with legal qualifications. There are often cheaper options available than going full law firm if you look online.

@patrickworld
Aw. Sorry to hear that.
Good that you know your stuff. Do you have legal help?
Go for the max.
@MennoWolff Thanks, got some advice, sent in my request for severance today. I’ll see what they say!
@patrickworld
I am sorry that after being there for that many years , you have to move on. You will have a great resume though, and wherever you land will be delighted to get someone that stayed with a company for 8+ years.
@patrickworld Hopefully you will still be able to use someone there as a reference and have a pension from them. Companies will do whatever they think they can get away with these days and have to look after number 1.
