Kids these days are so lazy. They just do everything with apps. Order food with apps. Socialize with apps. Find girlfriend with apps.

Back in my day you had to boot up your whole computer and log into a website to do that stuff.

@existentialcomics I know this is largely a joke, but it does kinda demonstrate the push by Big App to keep people away from tech literacy.
@flesh fr. no one ever talks about it but it's a pretty huge problem

@existentialcomics the trick was: only turn off the CRT. 😉
They way it was "off" according to Mom.

Follow me for other tips like: Keeping a backup NES controller hidden for when it's bed time and your parent takes away the one controller they know about so you can sleep.

@existentialcomics Back in my day, only nerds were using computers and you had to invite girl to a movies...
@xChaos
Were the movies at least better?
@existentialcomics

@ozzelot not really. but at least, once you had some girlfriend, there was chance, that you would enjoy going to movies together. Or so. I am not sure, it was long time ago.

Online dating never really worked for me (and this is why I am spending time on Mastodon)

@existentialcomics

@existentialcomics back in my days we picked up the phone. (Not a mobile one)

@existentialcomics well, I found my first girlfriend via IRC and that was no website… more like some app?

those websites are newfangled too!

@existentialcomics

You still can do that, but computers these days boot a lot quicker.

You can also leave them in sleep mode instead of powered off, in which case they'll be ready almost instantly.

Except the monitor, which for some damn reason takes like 5 seconds to wake up now. WTF is that nonsense. Powering up an LCD and negotiating with the GPU should take microseconds, shouldn't it?

@argv_minus_one @existentialcomics wow, that's nearly up to "booting a CRT from cold" timings

@patterfloof

Yeah, and at least the CRT had the excuse of needing to warm up the emitter.

LCDs have no such excuse. Laptop screens are on and fully bright before I even finish opening the lid, even if they've been off for a day. But desktop computer monitors, despite using the same technology, for reasons unknown, take a long time to turn on.

@existentialcomics

@argv_minus_one @existentialcomics I've got one LCD that can take a couple of seconds, but it's multi-input, so takes a moment to work out which one is being used
@existentialcomics a lot changed when we no longer had to go to The Computer
