People will react to news of major security vulns with "The only way to stay secure is to live as a hermit and throw your devices into the sea" and then keep chattering on the internet in a deeply unhermitlike manner while not throwing their devices into the sea.
@evacide I am going to steal this. It's the perfect combination of true and funny.
@evacide The sea, it calls to me.
@evacide Baby steps. I'm on my way out to throw my smart air fryer into the overflowing culvert at the end of the street.
@evacide I'm going off the grid as soon as i get to the end of the internet. Hopefully i won't get too many Likes because it's hard leaving knowing you'll let the fanbase down.
@evacide I tried throwing devices into the sea, but got arrested for ecological damage
@evacide the coherent Taoist hermit approach might be to live in a grotto on a mountain, doomscrolling meditatively whilst waiting passively for the sea to come swallow us and our devices eventually, inevitably. No chucking required. Bad reception though, perhaps, in that cave, in the meantime.
@evacide It is also well and good for one to throw devices in the sea while bypassers are there livestreaming the weirdo throwing the device into the sea, only to get fined for environmental pollution because you were caught on CCTV and facial recognition matched you to your old facebook and the credit agencies gave the cops your last address.

@evacide

In Germany they send the police at 4 am to deliver the news of new vulns.

No joke

WTF: Police responded on Saturday night due to a zero-day

Due to the security vulnerability in Windchill and ZeroPLM, police alerted affected companies. Administrators are irritated.

heise online
@evacide good for the sea i guess.
@evacide Turns out the sea isn't secure either. No access control and they've never updated the salt.
@evacide got rid of the charger, waiting on the phone to die.
@evacide I don't want to be secure, I just want to be right.

@evacide

Oh it's easy, just use the Throw Your Devices Into The Sea Google app!

The exact same attitude to the media industry being chock-full of questionable people left right and center: decry that everyone seems OK with that, then "separate the art from the artist" and keep following the exact same artists they used to anyways
@evacide can confirm… as someone who once quit by Blackberry and then threw it in the sea 😔
@evacide probably because very few are major league baseball pitchers living in pitching range of the sea.
@evacide The sea is already full of car batteries.

@evacide Security is a spectrum, and what's appropriate for, say, a military base would be cripplingly restrictive for an individual person.

That said, we're definitely biased for convenience over security.
