Didn't realise that house cats could be male until I was at a friend's house and said 'bill' was a strange name for a cat. I was 15. I still cringe thirty years on.
@fesshole Well, in your defence, 'Bill' IS a strange name for a cat.
@Eetschrijver @fesshole True, but at least it’s not Bob or Tom…
@fesshole How did you think an all-female species reproduced?

@daburudar @fesshole

"Singin' the blues
While the lady (house) cats sigh,
'Wild Stray Cat, you're a real gone guy...' "

@daburudar @fesshole certain cat variants are almost always female. Perhaps the OP half remembered an adult explanation.

Also, there are plenty of all female species, that reproduce by cloning. It even happens on occasion with species that have males.

@hendric @fesshole I think that describing a self-cloning parthenogenetic species as 'all-female" seems like trying to fit that species to human norms.
@daburudar @fesshole What? Dogs aren’t male cats?!
@daburudar @fesshole
Parthenogenesis!
@AlisonW @fesshole I think that's a big word for a bloke who doesn't know the word "tomcat". 😉
@daburudar @fesshole Somebody mentioned scissors, so I'm assuming they must cut off a piece of cat and grow it into a new cat like a plant
@daburudar @fesshole Parthenogenesis of course.
@jollymnemonic @fesshole Yes, it's already been mentioned.
I would question whether a parthenogenetic self-cloning species is "all female" or if this is just humans trying to fit nature into boxes that they understand.
@fesshole Wait what? When a woman cat meets a man cat. Oh, I give up, ask your dad.
@fesshole
TBF there are Swedish dialects where cats are considered to be females by default. (Standard Swedish has dropped the grammatical male/female genders.)
@fesshole yep, all cats are female, all dogs are male. I don't make the rules.
@fesshole this is true though. Male cats are called dogs.
