Hey Ottawans 👋

Do you know where I can find the origin of your street names? I want to know the story behind “Data Centre Rd” and “Tremblay Rd”

Yo les Ottaviens‱iennes 👋

Savez-vous oĂč je peux trouver l’origine de votre toponymie? Je veux connaĂźtre l’histoire derriĂšre « ch. Data Centre » et « ch. Tremblay »

@EdwinG
Well, the government data centre (CRA) used to be on Data Centre road. No idea about Tremblay but that is a common name here. Good luck

@EdwinG Sadly, contrary to the Commission de toponymie in Quebec, Ontario’s GeoNames database doesn’t go down to street names. You’d have to contact the City of Ottawa, since it’s one of its committees that decides on street names and likely keeps archives about what they’re named after.

@bougiewonderland 😱

Not sure I want to go through the whole “Access to Information” request, especially for the costs involved.

@EdwinG Often Wikidata is a good place to look, but in this case there is no information. 🙁
@uneabeille I was hoping for a more authoritative source, similar to QuĂ©bec’s place name commission. 😕
@EdwinG cra is not very original... The datacenter is on that road

@EdwinG Thsi does not contain your answer on Tremblay Rd, but could give you pointers

Image is from 1958 prior to construction of the "union" train station. The 417 was still being built. (You can see the exchange at 417/St-Laurant beilng built on right. And Tremblay had its onw bridge across the river to connect to Hurdman St. (in pioc 2, you can see the newly built but not yet open 417 bridge. Street predates train station by long time.

@EdwinG The city of Ottawa likely has an archives serction which may know when Tremblay Rd was created and how name was chosen.

However, not sure this area was part of the city of Ottawa when that road was created.

BTW, in the 1980s, the station was more refered to being *at* Alta Vista (now Vanier Parkway to north and Riverside to south of 417). Alta Vista now just a disconnected stub that no longer reached the 417 interchange. Pic from 1976

@EdwinG Duringthe transitway, the stop was the VIA station stop and never refered to as "Tremblay" and one never actually got on Tremblay sicne buses were on the Transitway. But since the construction of the lRT with the station away from the VIA station and named "Tremblay", the name of the street has become much more prominent.
@EdwinG Hey @DEWLine, do you know the origins of the mentioned roads?
