@leonieke Ohh, directed by Rian Johnson, great cast, I am intrigued!

The Brothers Bloom are the best con men in the world, swindling millionaires with complex scenarios of lust and intrigue. Now they've decided to take on one last job – showing a beautiful and eccentric heiress the time of her life with a romantic adventure that takes them around the world.
@leonieke Bah, it's not available anywhere, except on DVD 😞
Will bookmark for later, though, it does sound great.
@Ashedryden Hmm, maybe? The premise rings a bell. Might be a good excuse to try a local streaming rental service that claims to have been around since 2007 but which I only learned of recently 😄
Bookmarked!
@sindarina @Ashedryden I’d say definitely Inside Man and possibly Highest 2 Lowest (both Spike Lee) depending on your flexibility, plus Jackie Brown if you are ok with Tarantino’s, er, unique voice.
Snatch (Guy Ritchie) is more of a caper but could count. Wrath of Man (same director) is more explicitly a heist.
And I’d finally throw out Heat (Michael Mann) as definitely _having_ a good heist. In fact, Thief is also excellent, and Public Enemies could count too (both Mann).
Finally, Catch Me if you Can (Spielberg) is very close in tone and emotional feel to Now You See Me, IMO.
@cloudthethings @Ashedryden Yes! I have seen 'Catch Me If You Can', it's great. Same for 'Heat', although that one has been a while, and could probably do with a rewatch.
Bookmarking for later, thanks 😊
@sindarina
[edit: OPE! Totally overlooked the “recent” qualifier. I fail! But here’s my less recent list anyways.]
I do love a good heist.
I’m sure I’m missing a bunch that I’ll think of later, but these immediately come to mind (in order of release date).
Rififi (1956)
The Italian Job (1969*)
The Taking of Pelham One-Two-Three (1974)
A Fish Called Wanda (1988)
Point Break (1991)
Run Lola Run** (1998)
Ronin (1998)
Nine Queens (2001)
Rogue One*** (2016)
Bonus:
Pink Panther (1963) plus the other Sellers sequels.
The Guy Ritchie films of the early 2000’s for dumb fun.
*The 2003 was not as strong, but still fun.
**ok this one is only heist adjacent but it still hits the same vibe sometimes.
***It totally counts!
@mycrowgirl Ohh, yes, 'Ronin' is very good, I am pretty sure I saw that one in the theater back when it came out 😄
Great car chases. Should definitely do a rewatch sometime, amazing cast.
I have seen both Italian Jobs, and the remake of Pelham with Denzel Washington, and Rogue One is of course the best Star Wars movie of all time 😍
Will check the others, I think I've seen Point Break, but ages ago.
But have you seen Players (2012), the Bollywood remake of the Italian job?
The translations are something.
Hmmm I keep wondering if there is a South Asian version of Viki (which is mostly about East Asian movies and shows).
You might try the library, and interlibrary loan?
Edit:
Oh wait:

Hope it's not geofenced

Oh yeah, the subtitles. Forgot to check for those, sorry!
Anyway if sometime you get access to it it's worth marveling at the over-the-top interpretation.
@hattifattener @mycrowgirl The scope really starts to creep at that point, though. Like, by that definition, 'The Guns of Navarone' would also be a 'heist-ish' movie 😄
https://www.themoviedb.org/movie/10911-the-guns-of-navarone
And the same would be true for other 'small but very competent team against impossible odds', such as 'The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare', which I also loved;
https://www.themoviedb.org/movie/799583-the-ministry-of-ungentlemanly-warfare
So even though I opened that door by allowing Rogue One, I would still draw a line, well, somewhere 😂
@sindarina Kill James Bond did a season (several years?) of heist* movies, don't listen to the episodes if you don't want spoilers, but the episode list itself contains stuff not mentioned in the other posts.
*Sometimes they're stretching the definition of heist, but I got some really good recs from it
Twilight Gangsters!
Unfortunately it doesn't seem to be streaming anywhere right now.

@sindarina Not a heist movie, but a possible angle: "Sneaky Pete" is about a con man, but it does have several heist scenes in it.
Plus Giavanni Ribisi, who's hawt, and the delightful Margo Martindale.
It's kinda a dramedy.
@sindarina I’m glad you enjoyed it!
Beyond its sequel, a couple others occurred to me: They’re imperfect matches for “heist” but along those lines I’d also recommend:
Good Luck Have Fun Don’t Die (Sam Rockwell, a band of misfits, and an infiltration)
Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (animated, superb cast, criminals overcoming obstacles to acquire the MacGuffin)
…and then “MacGuffin” reminds me of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse for a talented animated ensemble working toward infiltration, but also not a perfect fit for the genre.
Ohhh but Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves IS a solid fit for the genre!
Different type of crime but How To Blow Up a Pipeline satisfied my heist itch.

Not a movie, but the recent (October 2025) miniseries Frauds is premiere heist content!
@AdrianRiskin Ah 😄
I choose not to, I have plenty to watch, read, and listen to without.
Anyway she offered as an alternative Polite Society https://www.imdb.com/title/tt18257464/ which is not a heist but also not not, but is an absolute delight. If you watch the trailer, stop halfway through because the rest is from the climax.
(Also mentioned in the comments, Leverage, which TBH I can only take so much of even though it should be Extremely My Thing, is inspired by Hustle https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0379632/) (2/2)
