I need more good heist movies, but I think I have seen most of them. Anyone got any recommendations for recent heist movies in the vein of the Ocean's movies, Casa de Papel (which Netflix so boringly renamed 'Money Heist'), Now You See Me, and so forth, with a good ensemble cast?

@sindarina
[edit: OPE! Totally overlooked the “recent” qualifier. I fail! But here’s my less recent list anyways.]

I do love a good heist.

I’m sure I’m missing a bunch that I’ll think of later, but these immediately come to mind (in order of release date).

Rififi (1956)
The Italian Job (1969*)
The Taking of Pelham One-Two-Three (1974)
A Fish Called Wanda (1988)
Point Break (1991)
Run Lola Run** (1998)
Ronin (1998)
Nine Queens (2001)
Rogue One*** (2016)

Bonus:
Pink Panther (1963) plus the other Sellers sequels.

The Guy Ritchie films of the early 2000’s for dumb fun.

*The 2003 was not as strong, but still fun.

**ok this one is only heist adjacent but it still hits the same vibe sometimes.

***It totally counts!

@sindarina (one day I will fully read the instructions. Today was not that day 😅)

@mycrowgirl Ohh, yes, 'Ronin' is very good, I am pretty sure I saw that one in the theater back when it came out 😄

Great car chases. Should definitely do a rewatch sometime, amazing cast.

I have seen both Italian Jobs, and the remake of Pelham with Denzel Washington, and Rogue One is of course the best Star Wars movie of all time 😍

Will check the others, I think I've seen Point Break, but ages ago.

@sindarina @mycrowgirl

But have you seen Players (2012), the Bollywood remake of the Italian job?

The translations are something.

@CelloMomOnCars I have not, but it sounds like I need to fix that! @sindarina
@CelloMomOnCars @mycrowgirl 'Not available for streaming' 😞

@sindarina @mycrowgirl

Hmmm I keep wondering if there is a South Asian version of Viki (which is mostly about East Asian movies and shows).

You might try the library, and interlibrary loan?

Oh wait:

Hope it's not geofenced

YouTube
@CelloMomOnCars @mycrowgirl It isn't! Starts out in an 'Amsterdam' that is very much not Amsterdam 😂
@CelloMomOnCars @mycrowgirl OK, without subtitles I am not going to last for almost three hours, even though it's amusingly bad.

@sindarina @mycrowgirl

Oh yeah, the subtitles. Forgot to check for those, sorry!
Anyway if sometime you get access to it it's worth marveling at the over-the-top interpretation.

@mycrowgirl @sindarina Rogue One makes me think about other movies about chancy, difficult wartime operations that take a ton of meticulous planning. It's a whole genre. And from there, is The Great Escape a heist(-ish) movie? What about other prison break movies?

@hattifattener @mycrowgirl The scope really starts to creep at that point, though. Like, by that definition, 'The Guns of Navarone' would also be a 'heist-ish' movie 😄

And the same would be true for other 'small but very competent team against impossible odds', such as 'The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare', which I also loved;

So even though I opened that door by allowing Rogue One, I would still draw a line, well, somewhere 😂

The Guns of Navarone

A team of allied saboteurs are assigned an impossible mission: infiltrate an impregnable Nazi-held island and destroy the two enormous long-range field guns that prevent the rescue of 2,000 trapped British soldiers.

@sindarina @mycrowgirl Just another day in the life of the Edge-Case Detective I guess!
@mycrowgirl @sindarina pink panther is very good!! Made me think of What's Up Doc from the same time period
