wtf. we really don't own our devices anymore: Google just released what you will have to go trough to install apps from developers not wanted by them: This is Censorship. This is closing android, this is ripping the last bit of control we had from our hands.

And all this talk of "sideloading" no, i'm just installing normal apps, you make it so that has to be all hacky and seem risky.

@Julian_1_2_3_4_5 Aren't there other, #FOSS phone operating systems we can use? I'm using one atm even though I'm not an expert (there are good tutorials online), and it works very well!
@leamusi @Julian_1_2_3_4_5 I was an android user and fan for years, but moved to Apple. I know, not much better, but I think they did take privacy more seriously than Google. As my iPhone battery neared the end of its life, I switched to a @WeAreFairphone 6 running @murena e/os. Definitely recommend for anyone slightly techy, but e/os is probably not quite ready for your friends/family that are not good with tech.
@solarmunk @Julian_1_2_3_4_5 @WeAreFairphone @murena Yeah, I also have a Fairphone running lineageOS. Installed it some years ago on the recommendation of a more techy friend, but maybe I should read up on whether it's till a good option now :)
@leamusi
that's not what most people will do sadly

@leamusi no... its a duoploly. ios OR android. With more and more manufacturers locking bootloaders tighter and tighter everyday even OS switching has become impractical and terrifying at the best of times.

Fairphones exists. They do not to my knowledge have a flagship device that meets the requirements of a power user in 2026. Maybe they will drop one right now and save us all πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

@Julian_1_2_3_4_5 wndering if 2 years guarantee covers "i did not sign for this, i want my money back" for my android device. I dont have google play, but some things are getting progressively difficult..
@annantidote
i would be surprised if that's coverd, but absolutely try it. We need to try everything
@Julian_1_2_3_4_5 this all tells me, we have to throw out google android completely and install alternatives. We need to go independent.
