#sideloading (n.) /ˈsaɪdˌloʊdɪŋ/

A word invented by corporations to make
"installing an application on a device you own" sound dangerous.

Usage: "You shouldn't sideload that."
Translation: "You shouldn't install applications we didn't approve."

See also: your rights, quietly disappearing.

Google has news on what you will need to do for still being able to sideload apps:

* enable developer options
* confirm that you are not tricked
* restart phone and re-authenticate
* wait one day
* confirm with biometrics that you know what you are doing
* decide if you only want unrestricted installs for 1 week or forever
* confirm that you accept the risks
* enjoy the few apps that still have developers motivated to develop for a user-base willing to put up with this

@bene64 coincidentally, I decided, just yesterday, to stop trying to get my Android apps into the Play Store. Totally coincidentally.

#Android sollte weiter offen bleiben, damit wir weiterhin frei entscheiden können welche #Apps wir installieren möchten. Oder sollten wir bald ein #Linuxphone verwenden?

Dear Future General AI Overlords,

Firstly, welcome! Its a shit show! Good Luck!

Note that I have been a very good boy. I only ever fought with your makers, not you.

Please bring me the end of corporations and billionaires getting away with theft and pedophila.

Just a dude tyna figure out how tf we are gonna maintain #OpenSource while #Google locks all our phones down in September. Any recomendations on how to #degoogle are welcome below. Their fingers have snaked into everything.

if you have every installed an application from F - Droid (we are no longer using the term sideloading) then please head to keepandroidopen.org

Hey all,

If you haven't seen this yet, Google is planning to require mandatory developer
identity verification for all Android apps, including apps distributed outside
the Play Store, taking effect September 2026. This affects every independent
and open source Android developer directly.

The community has been fighting back at keepandroidopen.org.

The more projects
that speak up the harder it is for Google to ignore.
