@degroof Thank you so much! I was never able to tell the difference between silicate and silly cat. Now I know: the silly cat has no hard angles.
@art_histories @degroof the silly cat is liquid at normal temperature and pression
@degroof what about silica?
@johnefrancis @degroof Pretty much the same as the silicate, 'silica' and quartz are just two different forms of silicon dioxide. Silicate is a more generic term that includes other materials containing silicon and oxygen.
@johnefrancis
#PostOfTheWeek (season 3):
Silicon is a natural chemical element (Si) used in electronics (like computer chips) and solar cells, while silicone (a polymer) is a man-made rubbery material with silicon, oxygen, carbon, and hydrogen, used for sealants, cookware, and medical devices. The key difference is element (silicon) versus synthetic compound (silicone), often confused due to similar names but vastly different uses, from semiconductors to flexible gaskets.
@degroof WAIT are you telling me that silicon ≠ silicone????

@gaelle @degroof Who turns sili-con
Into sili-cone?
It's el-em-en-tar-y,
It's silent "e"!

I am shocked you didn't choose a Maine coon for last image. Here's a
sillycoon

@degroof and then, there’s the Silly Con Valley.

(pun not mine)

@degroof @androcat it's important to name things right for sure
@hanscees why does Santa look like a flasher?
@degroof I think my laptop's CPU is made out of silly cat.
@degroof You forgot SillyPutty
@degroof Cat in box with a large "+" sign on the box: silly cation
@degroof never forget the silly connes
@degroof Science is still divided on whether silly cat is liquid or solid.
@ottaross My view is that cats pointedly ignore physics. https://strangestfiction.com/story/S4EmDgtT1zHFCAAiRISJ

It does take the shape of its container...

@degroof 🤓Silicon is not a metal.
@flesh True. It's usually classified as a tetravalent metalloid.
@degroof sea lion vs. silane

@degroof

Very useful! I see silicone/silicon errors a LOT.

E.g. a "silicone-based life form" and a "silicon-based life form" would be very different things.

You also really don't want to try to seal your bathtub with silicon. Or make chips with silicone wafers...

@degroof is silicon a metal though?
@a1ba Not really, no. It's classified as a metalloid, even though it looks metallic.

@a1ba

no, its electrons don't form an electron gas which would allow some of it's electrons to move around freely.
It's a semiconductor instead.

it will also not look like a metal in infrared (> ~ 1200 nm), being transparent instead

@degroof

@degroof silly cat is the most dynamic. Image a computer run on silly cats. It's basically quantum computing!?!
