@DavidM581 @SydneyJim @BackyardNudie A tricky one. It would be terrific to have a body that had media, legal and administrative resources but we are a small community and I’m not sure where the funds would come from for all those salaries?

@laughing_kooky @SydneyJim @BackyardNudie

Somehow the Naturist Community in the UK managed to lobbied to have their laws amended to decriminalise natural nudity vs lewd anti-social and undesirable behaviour?

@DavidM581 @SydneyJim @BackyardNudie Would be interesting to know how they did that. I wonder if the first steps are still to grow the membership, raise funds for causes that are important to us, and then exert the political or legal pressure when we have the strength of numbers?
@laughing_kooky @SydneyJim @BackyardNudie What you suggest has little chance of occurring in our life time given the current lack of support, resource and influence the ANF have today?
@DavidM581 @SydneyJim @BackyardNudie But if we leave the organisation in droves there will be no chance at all?
@laughing_kooky @SydneyJim @BackyardNudie
What you suggest has little chance of occurring in our life time given the current lack of support from the vast majority of the Aussie naturist community, the present ANF being so overwhelmingly under resourced and time poor with little to no formal qualifications for the tasks required for real change?(1/3).

@laughing_kooky @SydneyJim @BackyardNudie By supporting the current ANF structure, no reflection on the current or future committe members) we set ourselves up to continue to perpetuate the little influence the ANF have today?

As it stands, real change in Australia is highly unlikely until the Naturist Community gets together and makes a united stand in the mainstream Aussie society?(2/3).

@laughing_kooky @SydneyJim @BackyardNudie So it is not ‘throw the baby out with the bath water’, it is more we need a new bath to better care for the baby? Presently we are trying to wash our baby in a bucket that had holes in it!! lol

Sadly talk is cheap. ‘I believe, I believe’ means shit! Unity, money, power and influence appear to be what the Aussie Naturist community seem to lack?

So it is back to the nude beach for me and back to the nude beach from him!🤔 (3/3).

@DavidM581 @laughing_kooky @BackyardNudie I think it really comes down to two connected challenges: structure within the community, & perception outside it. Both need to move together. (1/10)
A practical path forward isn’t to abandon the ANF or blindly support it, but to use it as a base while building something more active around it. Think of it as a two-layer approach. The ANF remains the formal national body, while a more visible, community-driven network focuses on outreach, education, & public presence. That avoids fragmentation while still creating momentum. (2/10)
@DavidM581 @laughing_kooky @BackyardNudie
On the internal side, a simple but effective solution would be a transparent, community-supported framework for involvement. Clear expectations for representatives, basic vetting, & regular communication back to the community can rebuild trust without needing a complete structural overhaul. Even small improvements in transparency can have a large impact on credibility. (3/10)
@DavidM581 @laughing_kooky @BackyardNudie
For public #awareness, the key is shifting perception gradually rather than trying to force #acceptance. The most effective strategies tend to be calm, consistent, & visible: (4/10)
@DavidM581 @laughing_kooky @BackyardNudie
Normalise through presence. Everyday, #respectful visibility matters more than grand statements. Beaches, walks, & social gatherings that are clearly non-sexual & well-conducted quietly reshape assumptions over time. If enough people see these events, it will make an impact. (5/10)
@DavidM581 @laughing_kooky @BackyardNudie
Control the narrative. #SocialMedia should consistently show #naturism as ordinary, #respectful, & grounded in #wellbeing, #nature, #community. Avoid anything that can be misinterpreted, because public perception is fragile in this space. This is something I’ve been trying to do with my Mastodon account. (6/10)
@DavidM581 @laughing_kooky @BackyardNudie
Tell human stories. People relate to people, not movements. Sharing why individuals practise #naturism, focusing on #freedom, comfort, & #acceptance, helps others see it as relatable rather than confronting. These are things that I keep trying to reiterate in my posts. (7/10)
@DavidM581 @laughing_kooky @BackyardNudie
Engage, don’t confront. When challenged, calm & reasonable responses are far more effective than defensive or aggressive ones. Public opinion shifts through familiarity & trust, not pressure. Create soft entry points. Open days at clubs, beginner-friendly #NakedHiking or #NudeBeach gatherings, or educational content lowers the barrier for curious people without overwhelming them. (8/10)
@DavidM581 @laughing_kooky @BackyardNudie
Over time, if the community becomes more visible, more unified in its message, & more consistent in behaviour, broader acceptance follows naturally. From there, stronger advocacy, even political pathways if desired, becomes far more realistic. (9/10)
@DavidM581 @laughing_kooky @BackyardNudie
In short, the solution isn’t a single big move. It’s coordinated, steady effort: strengthen what exists, build visible community energy around it, & let public perception shift through repeated, positive exposure. Hopefully, this is already starting through my Mastodon posts, & hopefully the more who connect & post, the more exposure we get & it builds on from there. (10/10)
@DavidM581 @laughing_kooky @BackyardNudie

@SydneyJim @laughing_kooky @BackyardNudie

I agree will all you have stated. The only flaw I see in all you have said is that the ANF being our National body it needs to be the driving force to bring about change? The needs of the ANF are enormous yet for numerous reasons it fails to attract, retain and grow it’s influence and effectiveness.

@DavidM581 @laughing_kooky @BackyardNudie I understand the concern that simply maintaining the current structure may risk limiting progress, & I agree that broader visibility & unity within the #NaturistCommunity are essential if we want to see meaningful change in mainstream #Australian #society. (1/4)
But should support & progress be mutually exclusive? Supporting the ANF doesn’t have to mean accepting things as they are without question. It can also mean engaging constructively, encouraging improvement, & helping to build greater effectiveness from within. Without some form of national body, even an imperfect one, it may be difficult to achieve the kind of coordination needed for that united stand we so desire. (2/4)
@DavidM581 @laughing_kooky @BackyardNudie
I do agree strongly with your point about unity & presence. Real change will likely come from a combination of factors: a more visible & aligned community, clear & consistent messaging, & organisations that are capable of representing those values effectively. (3/4)
@DavidM581 @laughing_kooky @BackyardNudie
Whether that develops through strengthening the ANF, evolving it, or eventually building something new alongside it, perhaps the most important thing is that we avoid fragmentation & continue moving in a broadly shared direction. Your perspective raises important questions, & I think these discussions here on an open forum, when approached thoughtfully, are part of how that stronger, more unified path forward takes shape.” (4/4)
@DavidM581 @laughing_kooky @BackyardNudie
@DavidM581 @laughing_kooky @BackyardNudie I appreciate you taking the time to articulate your thoughts so clearly for everyone to read. These conversations are part of how the #NaturistCommunity continues to reflect & move forward. It’s never an easy decision to step away from something you’ve invested time & care into, & your perspective carries weight because of that. (1/5)
I think there is still value in maintaining a sense of collective support around the ANF as a unifying body, even while recognising its limitations. As you’ve said, it remains the only national organisation we currently have, & that alone gives it an important role, however imperfectly it may be fulfilling it at present. (2/5)
@DavidM581 @laughing_kooky @BackyardNudie
Your points around leadership, vetting, & overall effectiveness are important, & I agree these are areas that any organisation in this space must continually reflect on & strengthen. Constructive input, when it can be offered in a way that builds rather than divides, may still have a place in helping the ANF evolve over time. (3/5)
@DavidM581 @laughing_kooky @BackyardNudie
The idea of a more formal political presence is certainly interesting, though I suspect it would come with its own challenges in terms of scale, resources, & community alignment. Perhaps it’s not necessarily an either-or situation, but something that could develop alongside existing structures if there were enough shared will & clarity of purpose? (4/5)
@DavidM581 @laughing_kooky @BackyardNudie
I feel there is still merit in supporting what exists, while encouraging steady improvement & continuing to demonstrate, through our own #Naturist conduct, social media representation of #Naturism, & the values we want the broader community to understand. Change in this space tends to be gradual, & often comes from a combination of advocacy, visibility, & consistency over time. (5/5)
@DavidM581 @laughing_kooky @BackyardNudie

@SydneyJim @laughing_kooky @BackyardNudie

1000% agree and appreciate your thoughts and time weighted wisdom! The present ANF is all we have and it largely finds itself, as it is, directly due to the lack of real support from the National Australian Naturist Community. (1/2)

@SydneyJim @laughing_kooky @BackyardNudie Generally, the ANF committees past, present and future are very well intended but are grossly overwhelmed by the task at hand! 8 or so, with or without appropriately qualifications, on the ANF committee on a voluntary basis (largely unfunded) can not realistically achieve what our community needs particularly on a National basis. (2/2)
@DavidM581 @laughing_kooky @BackyardNudie We need a small core group of reliable #Naturists to act as coordinators. They don’t need titles or authority, just consistency. They don’t need to be members of the ANF, but to work alongside it. Their role should be to organise activities, set clear behavioural standards, & keep messaging aligned with respectful non-sexual #Naturism. (1/2)
Small well publicised gatherings are a strong starting point I think. Simple & repeatable on a semi-regular basis: #NudeBeach meetups, #NakedHiking, #SkinnyDipping get-togethers, #Naked picnics in a secluded park, or even #Naked BBQs. They should be well-run, welcoming, & calm. The key is not size, but consistency. A group that meets regularly & behaves respectfully becomes a stable example others can trust & join. (2/2)
@DavidM581 @laughing_kooky @BackyardNudie
@DavidM581 @laughing_kooky @BackyardNudie #SocialMedia then becomes a window into that normality. Constantly & consistently share images & posts that clearly show #naturism as relaxed, #social, & grounded in #nature. Avoid anything that could be misinterpreted. Focus on the atmosphere & the #Nudity, free of sexualisation or exhibitionism. Over time, this builds a quiet but powerful narrative that challenges assumptions without confrontation. (1/2)
Public presence does not mean forcing visibility into unwilling spaces. It means being appropriately visible where it already fits. Established #naturist beaches, private venues, & #Nudist areas. When those spaces are active, friendly, & well-presented, they naturally become points of curiosity & gradual acceptance. (2/2)
@DavidM581 @laughing_kooky @BackyardNudie
@DavidM581 @laughing_kooky @BackyardNudie Using #SocialMedia to explain what #naturism is & what it is not, I have found, has helped to bridge the gap for newcomers. Clear language around #respect, boundaries, & non-sexual intent is essential. If we grow this well enough, we can begin lightly coordinating with the ANF rather than working separately. Share what’s working, offer content, & help amplify each other. (1/2)
That’s where the “two layers” start reinforcing one another rather than competing. What do you guys think? (2/2)
@DavidM581 @laughing_kooky @BackyardNudie
@DavidM581 @laughing_kooky @BackyardNudie So I think to save the ANF from itself & to promote #Naturism we need to begin with a group of #naturists taking the initiative. The difference between success & failure is intention & consistency. We need to keep it #respectful, visible & not hidden behind a paywall or disguised with those dreadful mosaics, & it needs to be consistent. That’s what gradually shifts perception & builds something larger. Any thoughts?
@SydneyJim @laughing_kooky @BackyardNudie Seriously, it all comes back to the ANF being the National Body. Therefore all efforts need to be channeled with unity and cooperation under the ANF banner. That is to say, ‘a group of naturist’ needs to be in reality the ANF? (1/2)
@SydneyJim @laughing_kooky @BackyardNudie Australia is so divided, not only by vast distances but historical and current conflicts, not to mention the confusion caused by those who claim to be ‘naturist’ but actually harbour some form of sexualised agenda. As a result, the general public often get a very tainted view of naturism. (2/2).
