Well, that one remaining way matters a lot for a monitor…
@marcoarment Yup. I really want one, but won't buy it because of the size. I'm a single monitor user and the Pro Display XDR is just the perfect size.

@mark @marcoarment I saved up for over a year to buy one after it was announced. It seemed like the most ridiculous toy. But instead it has been single-handedly my favorite investment ever. Even my wife who’s not a big tech person commented the afternoon she used it that she had zero eye fatigue with it.

I’ve kept up on its AppleCare and recently migrated it to One to keep up the chance it’ll be repaired in the future if necessary.

32” 6k RIP

@bryanculver @mark @marcoarment damn might need to bag me a Kuycon…
@mark @marcoarment I’m not in the market for one, but it’s weird how Apple would make it smaller. I have to think that their market research and/or supply chain tells them this is the “ideal” size.
@mark @marcoarment Yep same, in 32" I would have ordered it right away,.. :(

@mark @marcoarment I have two 32” 6K and an LG DualUp hooked up.

I got the XDR a long time ago and the LG 32” 6K is honestly not that different. Neither of them are as sharp for text as the MacBook Pro displays, but for $2,000 the LG is a bargain if you just need a large display with sharp text.. burning a hole into your eye balls is not something any developer needs and 120Hz scrolling is not high up on the pyramid of needs of developers either.

I have had exactly zero problems with the LG.

@frankreiff @mark @marcoarment Does the LG 32 support True Tone brightness without having the MBP lid open? My LG 27 doesn’t so I end up using my MBP as a 14-inch sidecar.

I’m also curious how smooth virtual desktop transitions are when swiping across. On the 27 there’s the occasional stutter so it’s not buttery smooth like on the MBP without an external display.

@labotsirc @mark @marcoarment I honestly don’t care about such details and if you really do, Apple’s offerings are probably better for you.
@marcoarment I’ve been holding off on buying a Pro Display XDR for 2 years, hoping for a gen 2. Just bought one on eBay for ~$3k, instead of the Studio Display XDR. 6K or bust.

@marcoarment it like Apple is merely setting an easy ceiling for competition to beat on price while still working with apple quirks and getting close to spec and compatibility . So that Apple themselves doesn’t have to bother with it.

Oh? Yes. We have one, if you must. First, take this poison pill…

@marcoarment I’d been thinking the same but someone pointed out you only need to bring a 27” monitor 12-13cm closer and it fills the visual angle of a 32” display. So I’m thinking maybe I can just pull my Apple Studio Display slightly closer…

@babbage @marcoarment And if you run it at 1× after bringing it closer, you’ll get an _insane_ bump in usable space! 🤪

*and eye strain… how on earth did I do this regularly when I was young… 🙈

@marcoarment I dunno, sometimes I think we’re bad predictors of how much screen size matters beyond a certain point. I recently switched from a 32” ultrawide to a regular 27”, and it’s honestly been fine. Reminds me of when I got a smaller phone after having a Max. It’s a little weird for a bit, and then it’s normal.

YMMV, obviously.

@jmccance @marcoarment A couple of years ago I went from a 38" Curved Ultrawide to a Studio Display, I definitely miss the extra screen real estate but I did adjust. The most interesting issue was going from curved to flat my eyes keep playing tricks on me and the Studio Display felt like it had a fish bowl effect.

@marcoarment I don’t recall @atpfm covering the newish LG Ultra “Fine” 32-inch 6K as an alternative to the Pro Display XDR. It’s only $2K. I’m considering one.
