Which type of hateful discourse on the #Fediverse do you find most off-putting?

Big tech platforms often amplify conflict and outrage. The Fediverse aims to be different, but some recurring behaviors can still discourage people from participating.

Which one bothers you the most?

I created a similar poll on Reddit in the subs of the Fediverse and Mastodon:

https://www.reddit.com/r/fediverse/comments/1rzkrp6/what_kinds_of_speech_in_the_fediverse_turn_people/

https://www.reddit.com/r/Mastodon/comments/1rzkve6/what_kind_of_posts_on_mastodon_tend_to_turn/

It's interesting to compare the answers and results from here with those from Reddit polls. Some people seem to find the very act of creating the question and choosing sources of hate comments problematic.

@everton137 I personally like them all, also that's not what hate speech mean.

Hate speech is a thing the admins of your instance fail to moderate under the guise of free speech.

@everton137 against normies is the most annoying. DO YOU WANT PEOPLE TO USE THE FEDIVERSE OR NOT
@fwtl that's one very problematic indeed. I see people commenting that they don't want "normies" here.
@everton137 yeah no the normies will come wether they like it or not
@everton137 What is a normie? 😎 @fwtl

@NatureMC actually, I discovered this term after reading several replies to my posts blaming "normies", mainly when I raise questions about the Fediverse:

"Normies is a colloquial term used to describe individuals who tend to align with mainstream users and popular culture rather than niche communities or specialized subcultures."

https://themoneywiki.com/topics/normies/

Sometimes I few its use in a derrogatorry tone.

@everton137 Thanks for explaining! (My bubble may be "weird", but I never met so many wonderful tolerant non-normies like here!)

@fwtl

@NatureMC Recently, when I mentioned Bluesky or the idea of bringing more people to the Fediverse, I received some angry responses about people who had decided to use Bluesky.

I know lovely people who didn't get used to the Fediverse and now use Bluesky, and I'm upset by such a high level of intolerance towards others' choices.

I was going to create a post about such responses, but I was tired. Hate is generally exhausting.

@everton137 There's plenty of genuine racism and bigotry. I can't imagine this list being legitimately anybody's biggest peeve.
@gooba42 fair enough. Those are important issues indeed.
@everton137 Fediverse purists, the kind that complain about using Mastodon the "wrong way".

@Sibshops do you mean that the Fediverse is the same as Mastodon?!

Kidding. I agree, that's also annoying.

@everton137 - as far as I'm informed, @bsky sold their soul to a crypto company. So I deleted my account.
Not trustworthy anymore, especialy bc they kept it a secrect. Why? You guess the answer...
@wimvdputte I agree that's a problem. I don't blame or hate those who continue there.
@everton137 Against developers trying to build some services that somehow extend or interact with the Fediverse, see e.g. the Searchtodon drama, Content Nation, the attack on the Bridgy Fed developer before launching the bridge to Bluesky, Holos Discover last month, and so on

@mackuba I didn't know most of those examples. I'm curious now and will check them out. I've already seen criticism of the Bridgy Fed, which I think is good.

I usually invite people to use Mastodon, but some prefer Bluesky, we can still interact, though.

@everton137 Searchtodon here: https://searchtodon.social/Adventures-in-Mastoland.html

Content Nation: https://wedistribute.org/2024/03/contentnation-mastodons-toxicity/

Holos mentioned here: https://connectedplaces.online/reports/fr154-search-and-community/

Bridgy Fed github comments thread from the launch announcement (where at some point the dev was told he's acting like a rapist by building the bridge and should go to therapy): https://github.com/snarfed/bridgy-fed/issues/835

😕

@mackuba "the dev was told he's acting like a rapist by building the bridge and should go to therapy"

WTF.

@everton137 One thing that often happens in those cases is that people misunderstand how something works and get angry at their understanding of how it works… so a lot of people in that thread imagined that Bridgy is meant to somehow hoover up all data from the whole Fediverse into its own database and stream it all into Bluesky, or something like that. Which would definitely be a very unwelcome thing, but that was never how it was meant to work…

@everton137 I see much less outrage in Mastodon than on other social medias because my feed here is more tech, less personal and political.

I mean outrage in general, of which some is justified and some used as excuse for hate and bigotry. Much less of either type here than elsewhere.

@everton137 Hate against persons and minorities, racism. Others saying, it would not exist because they don't see/believe it.

Unfortunately, I don't find it again but a moderator of Mastodon wrote a very insightful thread why #hateSpeech is often hidden for others: These people work with "followers only" function.
But here's a good technical overview about the problems and moderator's work: https://community.hachyderm.io/blog/2024/08/12/hachyderms-introduction-to-mastodon-moderation-part-1/

@everton137 the "hateful discourse" on the fediverse is not augmented by algorithms. so it is just pure normal human communication within groups. it is only augmented by people who thrive on hateful posts, either because they love being hateful or because they love to show others how bad some things are they have found in their timeline and feel compelled to share hateful posts: professional complainers. luckily both types of people do not have the reach of the algorithms on the commercial platforms. so their communication tends to evaporate.

what i personally hate is how the twits swamped the fediverse some years ago and tried to impose their twits-behaviour on everybody already present claiming that only they knew how to correctly communicate in a social network environment ...

@jabgoe2089 Recently, I saw an announcement that a prominent European politician had joined Mastodon. Several comments were full of hate and related to some of the options above.

I actually have no idea what "the correct way to communicate" means. I saw a reply to my post criticising people who try to teach others the 'correct way' to communicate on Mastodon, which I have noticed happening occasionally.

For example, how many times have I seen people insisting that someone should add hashtags to their posts? I use hashtags myself, but I also follow some very interesting profiles that don't use them at all.

@everton137
Several comments were full of hate and related to some of the options above.
i don't know what politician you are referring to, but this behaviour is just normal! nothing out of the ordinary, i'd say. but if someone feels that there are too many of those people in their timeline they should start to get rid of them.

this stuff with hashtags is one of the twits' behaviours i was referring to. i has a meaning within mastodon, and also within diapora, but outside it has not. i cant follow hashtags from hubzilla since mastodon has recreated the hashtag stuff with complete disregard of the already existing solutions in the fediverse, if i am to believe some of the devs' posts i saw.

you'll always get people to tell you what is right and proper to do according to their valuable opinion. and then it is up to you alone if you follow the advice/command or if you ignore it.

lots of people show a tendency to act up as a blockwart (don't know how to translate that). and me, personally, i tend to ignore  them the more apodictical they act ...

far too long a text ....

@jabgoe2089 I must confess I laughed out loud by reading this comment on Reddit. The person supposed I created the poll because I'm having troubles on how to use Mastodon, so it was decided to explain the correct way to use it.😂

I created the same poll on Reddit to compare the results and comments with the poll on my microblog.

#Mastodon #Fediverse

@everton137 Honestly, for me it's this idea that "the #Fediverse" is so different from other #SocialMedia in the first place. Other social media has the same issues you mentioned. The big difference is those are owned by right-wing creeps pushing xenophobic fascist messages through algorithms.

That is the message we need to be spreading rather than wasting time (imo) with "the Fediverse culture". That isn't some fixed thing; it just depends on who you interact with, like in real life.
