I want to highlight two fun bits from this week’s episode of @atpfm https://atp.fm/683

First, we put the “hands on” into our very touchy-feely report about the MacBook Neo (starts at 24:00)

https://overcast.fm/+BQnv4MC0jU/24:00

But the real star of the episode is @marcoarment’s amazing story of how he, as a lone developer, created a transcripts feature for @overcastfm to compete with the similar feature in Apple Podcasts. You do not want to miss this one. (starts at 54:46)

Accidental Tech Podcast: 683: I Didn’t Want to Melt My Rug

Three nerds discussing tech, Apple, programming, and loosely related matters.

This episode also includes my theory about the black “speaker” modules in the MacBook Neo (starts at 41:55).

You can see the images I’m referencing in the iFixIt teardown video at 00:27 and at 05:57

@siracusa Why the BMW picture? I know you talked about the i3 but this ain't that
@davetempleton Check out the strut brace in that engine bay.
@siracusa They do look structural, but I also wonder if they are large, braced and screwed into the case in that way to better transmit low frequencies by using the case itself as an extension of the speakers.
@siracusa @atpfm @marcoarment @overcastfm Marco's description of dealing with servers in a data center took me right back to the 90s!

@siracusa @atpfm @marcoarment @overcastfm

Marco Cloud Compute.

Possibly Overcloud.

@siracusa @atpfm @marcoarment @overcastfm one of the best episodes of ATP - love the transcripts deep dive

@siracusa @atpfm @marcoarment @overcastfm The new transcription feature might entice me from Downcast (I love Downcast) if it works with the Patreon podcasts I listen to.

Also, a feature request for Marco. When sharing an episode from Overcast you should build the text for the post. Such as:

Listening to Accidental Tech Podcast (683: I Didn’t Want to Melt My Rug): https://atp.fm/683

Downcast does that.

@siracusa @atpfm @marcoarment @overcastfm Marco's odyssey was amazing. This episode absolutely enters the ATP canon.
@siracusa Most fun episode in ages. Great stuff.

@siracusa @atpfm @marcoarment @overcastfm Your Neo hands on rhymes very nicely with a friend’s experience. He’s massively downgraded his work machine and after a week he found himself looking forward to using it every day because it feels so nice.

And yeah, the main story really is the star. A Marco version of preparing the way, or something.

@siracusa @marcoarment really enjoyed it! Was fun to contrast with our setup at MacWhisper. (A quite different but also winding journey to how it is today!)
@siracusa @atpfm @marcoarment @overcastfm The transcription story was a very fun listen. $20k worth of Mac Mini's is quite a thing. Those kinds of nerd out projects are rare, and fun.
This is one of my favorite @atpfm episodes in years @siracusa. What @marcoarment has achieved with his implementation of the beta transcription feature on Overcast is quite impressive. Surpasses Apple Podcasts app in a few ways already.

@siracusa

The thing that struck me from the transcripts story was that, with the recent revelation that they sell about 1M mac minis each year, 18, while still a small number, feels like it might have been enough for Apple to have noticed the blip.

@atpfm @marcoarment @overcastfm

@bennomatic (Marco got 48, not 18.)
@siracusa @atpfm @marcoarment This one is up there with The Windows of Siracusa County
@siracusa definitely an instant classic segment! but I can’t help but wonder what Marco could do with some Nvidia GPUs 😆
