Even in a world of extremes, some events still stand out to me. This is one. All-time monthly records are being shattered.

The size of this ridge across the western U.S. is truly striking for March, and we see a very clear climate change connection.

Arizona community records US heat record for March

Abnormal heat on the last day of winter continues to set records in the U.S. Southwest. The Arizona desert community of Martinez Lake hit 110 degrees F on Thursday. It broke the record for highest March temperature recorded in the U.S. The community is about 145 miles west of Phoenix. The blistering record comes as forecasters warned that winter heat across the Southwest will continue into the weekend. The National Weather Service says many other cities in the region are expected to see their earliest 100-plus degree-day on record.

@ZLabe @moira I do not understand how people are not absolutely terrified.
@ZLabe We hit 114F this pm. Approx 20 miles south of Tucson. Our avg temp is 76F. Broke all records by 10F+ since records began. Whew…😵‍💫

@ZLabe

It reached 81 F (about 27 C) in Salt Lake City today. I lived there in the 1980s and for a few years around 2000 and during that time, that sort of temperature was unheard of in March. It was damned unusual in April. It normally didn’t happen for the first time until about mid-May.

@ZLabe And the snowpack situation in Utah? Unrelentingly bad. Here’s a picture from high up at Deer Valley, a major ski resort a bit east of Salt Lake City. At this time of year, all the mountains should be covered in snow and even the valley near the reservoir should have at least patchy snow much of the time. There is *no snow* except in very favorable locations (like parts of the ski resort itself) or at the very highest elevations.

There’s another week or so of 10+ C above normal temps that are simply going to clobber what’s left of the snowpack.

@dpnash Wow, that is just shocking to see.
@dpnash @ZLabe Who needed snow anyways? Like what would you even use it for? Water runoff to supply people with clean drinking water? Why would you need that?
@dpnash @ZLabe
I live in Cache Valley. We should have several inches to a foot or more of snow on the ground. My neighbor was out mowing his yard today. 😬

@ZLabe Revisiting this post 8 days later: here's today's photo from the same location. 8 days of brutal heatwave later (though the last day or so hasn't been as bad):

- the snowy area under the chairlift is patchy, with large areas of bare ground
- the snow on the mountains in the distance has noticeably receded
- though it's not noted in the image, Deer Valley, the ski resort this webcam is at, is throwing in the towel, closing this coming Sunday, a month ahead of a typical closing date (around the end of April).

@ZLabe Currently trying to literally 'chill' at Lake Mead. Which is to say, we're holed-up in the RV with the A/C pumping its guts out, because no one's carcass has acclimated to this sort of heat level yet. 🥵 ☀️

@ZLabe

The druought this summer will be massive. The PNW will be hit hard.

@ZLabe

Good thing climate change isn't real and we're tripling down on fossil fuels.

@ZLabe It was pretty brutal. I just moved down here from New England.

It's been a shock.

@ZLabe We're gonna need a new colour.

@ZLabe And yet everyday I'm baffled at how people keep moving to the parts of California that are actively on fire.
@ZLabe We had something like this a couple years back in Silesia. Early April we had a one night freeze at -4C. Most plants got frost damage that year, and no tree fruits like apples or plums. I fear this will become the new normal.

@ZLabe

This gives "red states" an entirely new meaning.

@ZLabe Could it be that the Earth is heading for, yet another, terrifying, yet morbidly fascinating, mass extinction event?! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extinction_event 😳😉

@ZLabe I've also read that NAAO said that El Niño may be back this fall (probability 60/80 %). Last time, 2023/2024 (!) global temperatures were 1,5° C above industrial aera…
Our house is burning and they're bombing for peace and democracy. Suicidal tendancies.

@ZLabe

Even on the edge of the zone in SW #Iowa, we hit 90° F / 32.2° C this afternoon. I’m sure that’s a record. It would be an unusually warm day even for April or May.
