I recently started following some accounts related to FOSS and mobile devices. In particular, there's been a focus on Linux (not Android) on cell phones.

It's introduced me to a lot of new information and viewpoints.

One recurring point many have been making is the diminished (if not nonexistent) support for apps...especially banking apps.

It strikes me as odd that Linux enthusiasts and privacy-minded types are seemingly beholden to Android/iOS apps.

@DaveMasonDotMe Personally, I use as few apps as possible since they feel redundant to me when (working) websites exist. If a service doesn't have a decent website - or no website at all - I probably won't use it.

That's not always an option for things like banking, which is certainly a problem for FOSS mobile devices currently.

@SimpleEasyLinux

I with you on all of that. Web sites > apps

RE: banking
Are there banks that don't have websites/online banking? That's hard to fathom!

@DaveMasonDotMe I don't know any for sure, but it wouldn't surprise me with how apps are pushed on us for every service.

I think my bank requires the app for online paper cheque deposits, but that could be more about their back-end and verification rather than disincentivizing online banking.

@DaveMasonDotMe @SimpleEasyLinux some banks force you to use their app for auth. I've chosen my bank especially to avoid that, hoping it will last,
but for work we use Qonto... no way to even login without app.

@DaveMasonDotMe
It's only my bank, and coffee, that I haven't swapped out.

Coffee I quit going to, as they "updated" to require Android 10 and my old junker is on 9, no more specials no my purchasing.

The bank I can manage at home, where the old phone that only lasts about two hours off the charger sits.

Steam is still 100% derp on their 2FA being in a janky app rather than TOTP, but at least they offer it on their site so I can run it on Lineage.

@DaveMasonDotMe I would love to use a Linux phone, but so far my e/OS phone does everything I need and I'm hesitant to switch out something that works great for something that may or may not work all that well.
