Meta, having renamed itself Meta and spending billions on it, is shutting down its metaverse VR platform. https://www.theshortcut.com/p/meta-is-shutting-down-horizon-worlds-vr-despite-investing-billions-into-the-metaverse
don't worry, all these orgs are also hyping GenAI as the next big thing.

@GossiTheDog

Bitcoin, nft, VR, AI.

Seeing as all these things are not worthy of our time and effort to fight, but needing to die, I am happy to let Meta do the killing.

@avuko @GossiTheDog
VR is cool, but definitely not in a "let's rebuild our society around it" kind of way.
@GossiTheDog but this time it’ll be different!
@GossiTheDog I think my opinion on AI is fairly balanced. https://mastodon.online/@pmb00cs/116218263576211606
Craig Stewart (@[email protected])

As I see it there are 3 broad possibilities for the future of AI. 1) it works, knowledge workers are replaced wholesale, no one is earning enough to buy anything anymore, the economy collapses. 2) it doesn't work, the investors start to demand results that cannot be delivered, the speculative bubble bursts, the economy collapses. 3) it doesn't work, but it's sold to incredulous buyers as if it does, this looks like option 1, but so much worse because there's nothing of value to buy anyway.

Mastodon

@pmb00cs I agree. It’s grim. A defective product applied to everything seems like a bad approach.

[I think you meant “credulous”.]

@skry I might have meant "restrained by my desire to still be employable long enough to retire"
@GossiTheDog money != credibility. maybe we'll learn the lesson this time. probably not tho

@GossiTheDog

When is everyone going to accept that Facebook/Zuckerberg didn't _create_ the next big thing in social media... He stumbled across it?

He _found_ it. He didn't _build_ it. He _monetized_ it, for certain. These things aren't the same, however.

@401matthall the word create isn't in the thread anywhere

@GossiTheDog

Yeah, that wasn't directed _at_ you or your thread but the people writing the articles you shared. The lack of the _word_ doesn't mean/imply the lack of the intent.

The suggestion is _strong_ in articles referencing Meta that the company has the ability and wherewithal to _create_ the next big thing in social media.

It's a lot of inference but again, I wasn't directing my words _at_ you. More an ancillary comment on the articles.

@GossiTheDog Desperate to get in on the next WWW early!

@GossiTheDog That's so sad. All those avid users of the metaverse being left behind.

Do you think they'll be able to find solace in sport? Form a five-a-side football team, maybe.

@darkling
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
@GossiTheDog
I'm not clued up enough to understand what remains of "the Metaverse" the Zuckster was banging on about a few years back, once you kill the VR component. Does that mean some significant part of his metaverse enterprise still remains, or does this mean that the whole shebang is essentially kaput?
@GossiTheDog people will always have this biological and psychological need to connect, share stories and art. These companies try and replace that believing they can enslave biology, but always ultimately fail.
@GossiTheDog for a second, I thought the first door was NTFS

@GossiTheDog

But, But, but....

This was to be the future, fashion shows, job applications, all would go through second li.....i mean Meta VR

@GossiTheDog Honestly, as pessimistic as I was, "Meta" threw so much money and reputation at metaverse I honestly thought something permanent would come out of it even if it was still just a token executive toy VRML chat app just to keep the boss happy.
@GossiTheDog they'll be redepositing the spending on ai I'm sure

@GossiTheDog you’re telling me that the VR platform… didn’t have legs?

I’ll see myself out 🧥➡️🚪

@GossiTheDog Oh ya, remember NFTs. That was a flash in the pan. I think I still have a few in a box somewhere.

Whatever happened to Web3 anyway?

I still cant get over how the Metaverse what supposed to be the next big thing when a decade+ earlier SecondLife never became universally popular.

@GossiTheDog
The plan is to change its name to "Artificial."

It better move fast, though.

@GossiTheDog
Is it too much to hope for that they will rename themselves to Bold Ai Delivery or maybe something more concise than that?
@dirkhh @GossiTheDog unfortunately there’s no need to rename the company again, they can just start referring to their “AI” products as “metacognition”

@GossiTheDog

What'll be their next rename ?

@GossiTheDog

The Metaverse was a short-lived terrible place full of the worst kind of human behavior you can imagine with little to no moderation. I'm glad to see it's gone, but I wonder what scam they're going to try next.

@GossiTheDog I saw the image before the post text and thought that said NTFS ome
@GossiTheDog Facebook realizing that no matter how often they called it the future, no one wants to play their shitty video game, let alone live in it: :shocked_man_turns_into_bowling_ball:
@GossiTheDog Facebook should just burn to the fucking ground honestly. It was nice back in the early days with its games and stuff, but yeah they treat humans like guinea pigs and lab rats.
@GossiTheDog Suddenly, the metaverse seems not so bad.
@GossiTheDog They're shutting down the boring, infant-friendly side of it. But I doubt they've given up on the idea. Far from it...
@GossiTheDog
Yeah this won't explode at our hands at all, right?

@GossiTheDog

Stealth eco-warrior Trump has almost guaranteed to fold the global economy in half guaranteeing to take out energy, hungry AI with it.

@GossiTheDog I had no idea it was still a thing TBH. Assumed they'd killed it years ago. Never even saw it aside from the odd screenshot.
@tdp_org @GossiTheDog So really, it did not have legs!
@tdp_org @ai6yr @GossiTheDog "it was held back by ... limitations when it came to locomotion."
@GossiTheDog Does anyone at these behemoth tech cos read the medical literature showing that something like 20% of the general population gets motion sick with VR? I suspect even more find it somewhat unpleasant.
@GossiTheDog Meta gonna change their name again, this time to fAIcebook.
@GossiTheDog I can't make enough popcorn.
@GossiTheDog Might as well add 'The free and open internet' and 'The right to own your PC' to the list of doors where murder took place, given Meta's doing the bulk of the lobbying for these age-gating laws that aim to kill both those things.
@GossiTheDog oh no! Maybe I'll fire up my Quest 2, let it install a couple years of updates, maybe even poke at the ported version of Myst on it.
