Does anyone know a museum or other institution that would be willing to take this large vintage railway wheel(?) press? It's marked "Chambersburg Engineering Co., No. 863", and a long time ago it was used to help maintain rail cars at the Port of San Francisco. Unfortunately it's going to the scrap yard this week because no museums we've tried are willing to come haul it away. boosts appreciated.

edit: Sorry folks, there was less time than I thought. It's already out the door this morning 😔

I'm not in charge of anything at this shop. This is just a last ditch effort to reach out and try to save some beautiful old iron.
@nomi It looks like Precision Frame & Axle is still around in San Jose. I wonder if they might have a use for it, or know of some company that would. You might try giving them a call.
@nomi Maybe the Henry Ford museum? I dunno if they'd be interested, but they have lots of cool train stuff there https://www.thehenryford.org/

@nomi Try the Henry Ford in Dearborn, MI.
@nomi Thanks for recognizing the historical value and trying to find a home for it. Have you tried the Smithsonian. If they don’t want it, they may have a list of railroad museums you could contact.
Where is it, that'll influence things, I might try https://tnmot.org/ or maybe https://www.strasburgrailroad.com/ , that last one isn't a museum but a historical railroad, maybe they'd have a use for it.

@nomi

So there are 862 others of this out in the world somewhere?

@nomi #Pennsylvania #Train museum folx! No idea if anyone has the way or means to make that trip, but this could be an awesome thing to bring home!
@crankyoldbugger @nomi unfortunately every museum I know of is always short on space, and couldn’t afford the space for things they aren’t going to actively use frequently. Mine would never be able to justifying storing this, even if we weren’t thousands of miles away across a border.
@sen @nomi I know, but it's just sad.

@nomi I hope you find someone because that is an absolutely beautiful piece of classic machinery!

It's a real long-shot, but there's a blacksmith who puts out stuff on youtube, based out of Montana - Will Stelter - who absolutely adores old, beautiful machines like this. You could try reaching out, if nothing else, it might be a lead to someone else.

Just in case it’s slipped your mind… there’s an awesome museum is Sacramento. They might have some suggestions. It would be a shame to see it scrapped.

California State Railroad Museum

Located in Old Sacramento, the California State Railroad Museum is regarded as North America’s railroad museum. Home of the Polar Express.

@nomi Perhaps The Henry Ford in Dearborn, Michigan?
@nomi it seems like something the Chattanooga Choochoo might want, last time I was there I talked to some engineers who complained about the difficulty of finding maintenance equipment? It’s a long way to go if it’s in SF though
@nomi that is not scrap, it is a work of beauty

@nomi

This seems like something you could definitely have gotten a tech company to decorate their lobby with 10-20 years ago and maybe still could today

Not as good as a museum but it would keep it from being scrapped

@nomi I don't know if it's up their alley, but around here there's the Oregon Rail Heritage Center. Maybe it's worth a query to them?

State railroad museum in Sacramento passed?

@nomi Re: Wheel Press You could try this place. Pretty cool railroad museum in northern Illinois.

@nomi I threw it out to my social circles (Telegram) and someone suggested Wreck2Restored?

they aren't west coast, so it's a long shot, but could be worth reaching out to maybe?

Hey @csilverman, need a model for your art?

@nomi

Where is the press located?

If it's in the #sfba, perhaps it might be of interest to the Niles Canyon Railway?

@nomi

This is a pretty low budget, punk museum, that focuses more with hobo culture than the industrial aspect of rail culture, but as a last ditch, who knows they may be interested and they have a lot of space. Also, a very cool place to visit if you're headed up I-5 past Mount Shasta/Weed area in Northern California.

@nomi We should never allow this to be scrapt.
These machines are costly to build these days.
Better to give scapyard price and find a way to move it, if it has to be moved.
Looks well maintained for it's age.
@nomi This picture looks like a Render made with Povray Ray Tracer or other just as great or different Ray Tracer.
It looks so realistic .
Well done!
If it's real, it looks Computer Generated Graphics.
@nomi I wonder if there are any model railroad clubs that might be interested or at least know someone who would be?
@nomi I want to be a museum 😭

@nomi Lots of good suggestions already. Here's two more:

The Nevada Northern in Ely Nevada runs trains and has an engine shop (steam).

Farther away but better funded is the Age of Steam Roundhouse Museum in Ohio.

@nomi Three rail museums I'd check with are:

1) Northern Nevada Railway in Ely. They have a full operational machine shop and maintain their equipment onsite. They probably could use the machine.
https://nnry.com/

2) Laws Railroad Museum, near Bishop, California.
https://www.lawsmuseum.org/

3) Nevada State Railroad Museum, Carson City, Nevada. They have a lot of operating equipment and machine shop as well.

Hope that helps!

This is my channel where I shoot video of some of my favorite things. I enjoy working on and restoring all kinds of vintage machinery - from woodworking machines, metal working machines, old farm equipment, steam engines, and steam locomotives. I spend a lot of my spare time volunteering at the Georgia Museum of Agriculture where I help to restore and keep their machinery up and running.

@nomi at the very least we should get video of these machines doing their job. I'm sure there is something novel future generations would appreciate documented.

@nomi Fascinating! I was born and raised in Chambersburg. My first IT job (30! years ago) was at T.B. Wood’s Sons, a foundry similar to CECO. The two collaborated heavily during WWII. Both started in the 1800s.

T.B. Wood’s is still a major employer in the area, though Chambersburg has grown explosively in the last few decades, so it’s not quite as influential within the workforce as it once was. Wood’s has its own one-room “museum.”

@nomi Western Railway Museum https://wrm.org ? (I’ll admit I didn’t look theough the replies to see if they had already been suggested)

@nomi To your update, that’s sad news. You tried though. ❤️
@nomi 😮😭😭😭
@nomi
Where is it located now? You mention San Francisco, does Penna mean Pennsylvania? If it's still in California I may have a friend who collects train stuff who may want it.
@nomi
Oh no! It appears I was too late. 😟
@nomi rail museum in Golden, CO, comes to mind
