There is (or was) a rather long thread somewhere on the fedi explaining why LGBTQ+ folks - and especially trans women - are perceived by white Christian nationalists as such a threat to their desired social order. It had hundreds of boosts.

I'm pretty sure it was written by some sort of academic with relevant credentials, as it ended with at least three posts of references! Other than that, I can only recall they were on a server with a 500 character limit.

Does this ring any bells for anyone?

@ApostateEnglishman maybe it was @faithisleaping ? That sounds like something she would write. If not, she probably remembers who 😁

@JoscelynTransient @faithisleaping Thanks! I always bookmark anything of interest to me, but that's precisely the problem: I now have πŸ‘‰πŸΌthousandsπŸ‘ˆπŸΌ of bookmarks, with no way to sort or easily search them. 😳

I could have bookmarked the URLs in a browser and organised them into categories, couldn't I? Ah that 20/20 hindsight..

@ApostateEnglishman
It doesn't sound hard to crawl a bunch of urls and index them. I'd bet there's an open source tool that does exactly what you need.

(I'm going to bookmark this with the intention of finding it and improving this reply because I have the exact same problem 🀣)

@JoscelynTransient @faithisleaping

@ApostateEnglishman @JoscelynTransient @faithisleaping

(How do you bookmark them if not in a browser?)

@cavyherd @JoscelynTransient @faithisleaping In your Mastodon account. Which yes is technically still in a browser, but is still not the same as using the browser's bookmarking system. You have to log in to your Mastodon account to see your bookmarks, which are strictly chronological.

@ApostateEnglishman @JoscelynTransient @faithisleaping

Ah. Right.

This would be why I haven't used that bookmarking system. Go me, I guess?

It does seem like there ought to be a way to at least export that bookmark list?
@FediTips ?

@cavyherd Yes, you can specifically export bookmarks through the backup interface into csv and then directly import them into a bookmarking service (like raindrop, linkwarden etc.) that’ll grab the information from the link previews (or the page for local storage if preferred). It’s even a separate tick box to the whole account back up. Had to do it myself recently as mine too got a bit unweariedly.

@cavyherd @ApostateEnglishman @JoscelynTransient

You can search your bookmarks and other posts you've interacted with by including in:library in your searches on Mastodon. More info about Mastodon searches at https://fedi.tips/how-do-i-search-for-stuff-on-mastodon/

You can export bookmarks as well as many other parts of your account by logging in on your server's website and going to βš™οΈ Preferences > Import & Export > Export, then clicking the CSV link next to whatever you want to export.

An unofficial guide to using Mastodon and the Fediverse

@FediTips @ApostateEnglishman @JoscelynTransient

Excellent, thank you!

Bookmarking this reply! (heh)

@cavyherd @ApostateEnglishman @JoscelynTransient @faithisleaping
On Mastodon!

The in:bookmarks search option is really missing (additionally i would love an in:timeline option too)

Sidenote: i never really figured out what in:library searches through. I always find results i don't expect while missing others I had expected

@realn2s @ApostateEnglishman @JoscelynTransient @faithisleaping

Interesting. These do sound like they would be great.

@realn2s in:library should include all your bookmarks… as well as favorites and boosts ^^
@JoscelynTransient @ApostateEnglishman Pretty sure it's not me.
@faithisleaping @JoscelynTransient Thanks anyway! I appreciate you leaving open the possibility that you might conceivably have written something like that, but then forgotten about it. 🀭
@ApostateEnglishman @JoscelynTransient I mean, I do like writing long rants about things, not limited to but including the intersection of trans life and Evangelical Christianity. I'm just not as academic about it as you described.
@faithisleaping @ApostateEnglishman yeah, the academic sources sounded different, but figured there was a chance maybe you saw this and knew, since it is definitely in your wheelhouse. Appreciate you replying!
@ApostateEnglishman I haven’t seen the specific piece that you seeking, but I have read something similar that Muslim women present a large danger to the far right in a similar capacity. This is why they fear monger on their no go zones to try and neutralize their power to organize in places like Birmingham and Greater Manchester.
@Emmeline I would also be interested in that! πŸ‘€
@ApostateEnglishman I am in a similar spot to you with this piece, I forgot where I found it! I can’t remember my sources from this morning, that is how much reading I do to keep up.

@ApostateEnglishman It wasn't me, but I Have Thoughts.

"Traditional marriage" and "family values" are IMHO code for "traditional gender roles". L/G couples really *are* a threat to traditional gender roles.

If the neighbourhood children should see (*horrors*!) a man ironing or cooking, or a woman fixing the water heater, then the neighbourhood children might get the idea that maybe traditional gender roles weren't that important.

I'm not as sure about why trans women make cis men go batshit crazy. (I don't really think they care about trans men.) My best theory is that conservative men think that being a man is OBVIOUSLY way better than being a woman, so the idea that a man would *choose* to leave the best gender breaks their brains.

Obviously, they think, being a woman is inferior to being a man, so *they must be doing it for nefarious reasons*. Like they are lying about wanting to be a woman, they just want to be able to leer at naked women in the locker rooms.

That's my best guess, anyway.

@ducky That all looks fairly spot on, to me! Thanks for your thoughts. πŸ™πŸΌ

@ducky @ApostateEnglishman

My sense is that conservative men are so terrified of discovering (or being discovered) they are gay (especially if they are & not out, even/esp to themselves) that β€’anythingβ€’ that piques that attraction risks immolation of the soul, so they attack it viciously & reflexively. Transwomen are so very much the worst possible combination of targets for this attraction. "Sinful" in at least two dimensions. & if the "cis" man is attractedβ€”πŸ˜± 🀯 = uncontrollable rage/terror

@ducky @ApostateEnglishman

I don't mean to be too reductive here, but on the trans woman front I kind of have a suspicion that many who are cis men and against trans women is that they are afraid of being attracted to someone they think of as male, which makes them feel insecure about their own masculinity, and anything that threatens their masculinity and being the manliest man is something that is dangerous to them, but that's only a suspicion, I don't know if it's actually true.

@sotolf @ducky I would say there's definitely truth in that! It's also why this morbid fear of predatory cishet men pretending to be women so they can access female spaces, is so ridiculous: no group is less likely to go to such lengths!

What's far more likely is that an actual trans woman gets beaten up or otherwise abused in the men's restroom.

@ApostateEnglishman @ducky

Yeah, that one I never understood, it's also kind of interresting to see that all the ones I've seen complaining about that are white cis males.

What is a trans woman supposed to do in a men's toilet many will as you say suffer from abuse there, others will be asked to get out since they don't look like a male, because they aren't...

@sotolf @ApostateEnglishman @ducky

An anecdote, and a whimsy.

At the concert, the women were tired of the long lines and slow throughput of their bathrooms, and they invaded the lines to the mens restrooms.

The restrooms were busy, unisex, and oddly happy and friendly, due no doubt to the presence of women.

If all bathrooms were unisex, and women were frequently present, I think singling out trans people would be much harder, and abuse much less frequent.

Of course, if frogs had wings...

@ApostateEnglishman Sorry but all I can do is chuck my hypothesis (as a cis het male of all things) on the fire. I think it has to do with autonomy and who gets to have it. Christian nationalists simply don’t think people are actually free to decide who they want to be. They believe in total hierarchical organization of society. No points for guessing who’s on top.

@kmck Yes! The thread I'm seeking made more-or-less that exact point, only more expansively. Once you conceptualise white Christian nationalism in that way - as a monolithic, patriarchal hierarchy in which everyone has a preordained place, with a particular anthropomorphic (male) deity at the top - it becomes easier to imagine which social groups are threatening to them, and (in their eyes) undermine the integrity and smooth functioning of the machine.

A rigid concept of "masculine" is central!
