"The US is no longer a democracy. One of the most credible global sources on the health of democratic nations now says this outright. The Varieties of Democracy (V-Dem) Institute at Gothenburg University reaches the alarming conclusion in its annual report, that the US is hurtling towards autocracy at a faster rate than Hungary and Turkey."

‘Trump is aiming for dictatorship’. That’s the verdict of the world’s most credible democracy watchdog

Sweden’s V-Dem Institute warns that the US is no longer a liberal democracy. And autocracy is creeping across Europe too, says writer Martin Gelin

The Guardian

"The same crowd that deplored the notion of modifying the filibuster when Democrats wanted to pass civil rights legislation, now is pushing to do away with it to achieve the most massive disenfranchisement effort since the end of Reconstruction. (Not coincidentally, the modern counterpart is also rooted in the South and championed by White Christian nationalists aimed at securing white supremacy.)"

Save us from the ‘SAVE America Act’

"This massive disenfranchisement push mimics Jim Crow legislation (e.g., requiring a passport, which can cost $165, is akin to a poll tax; obtaining a birth certificate may involve travel to the county clerk in one’s place of birth and paying a fee). It is blatantly unconstitutional, a gambit by the most lawless and corrupt regime in history (whose identity is rooted in election denial) to take over elections from the states."

"It is estimated that about half of people in this country do not have a current passport. Also, many people do not have a copy of their original birth certificate. And birth certificates often do not reflect a person’s current name. An estimated 69 million married people changed their name from that on their birth certificate."

The SAVE Act: Awful and Unconstitutional

Though it would do nothing to protect the integrity of elections, it would keep many citizens from being able to register to vote.

The Contrarian

"Studies show that necessitating proof of citizenship for voter registration, like requirements for photo identification for voting, will have a disproportionate effect on lower-income individuals and people of color."

"Donald Trump isn’t just trying to win the 2026 midterms. He’s trying to rig them in advance and dare the country to stop him. The strategy isn’t subtle. It’s happening in press conferences, White House statements, and floor speeches. It has a catchy, patriotic name — the 'SAVE America Act' — and it’s being sold as common‑sense 'election integrity.'”

"But the real objective is to make it harder for 'undesirable' people to vote, fast‑track the changes before November, and let gerrymanders and the Senate do the rest."

"Why is this [i.e., the SAVE Act] the top priority?

Since the start of this administration, Trump has led a concerted strategy to undermine our elections. That strategy has only escalated as we draw ever closer to the midterms."

The Anti-Voter SAVE Act Must Be Stopped

If passed, it would be the most restrictive voting bill ever approved.

@wdlindsy
No idea why this is still a conversation. He TOLD everyone during the last election campaign that they'd never have to vote again, because he was going to 'fix it'.
@bytebro I wouldn't characterize Michael Waldman and Emily Whitehead as trying to engage in a conversation. I read them to be issuing a warning.

@wdlindsy

Understood.
One might speculate that it's a warning too late, but I guess it is what it is.

@wdlindsy

also another aspect of the obligation of *re*-registering (for everybody) will probably be that there will be an afflux of people to do that formality, and probably not enough county clerks, thus slowing voters registration

@wdlindsy

If the planning for the #Iran War is any indication, the #SAVE Act may turn out to be a toe stubbing for the #Repubicans.

Apparently, those aqlready registered only have to show ID at the polls.

New registrants (and likely those who move) need to show a passport or birth certificate and marriage certificate if you changed your name.

I'm not sure how this is going to help #Trump fans up the hollers of West Virginia. Of all people, they are least likely to have a passport.

@wdlindsy

Whenever a lawmaker says his initiative is a "common sense" measure, it will likely turn our to be contrary to law. It's a retreat to the motte.

@wdlindsy

At least the #SAVE Act would not change procedures before the 2026 elections.

I can imagine a situation in which new procedures were promulgated. The matter goes quickly to #SCOTUS which refuses to interfere "so close to the election."

After the election, the whole SAVE Act is found unconstitutional, nevertheless one election was contaminated.

@Stinson_108

Out of curiosity, because I haven't read it, what specifically might be unconstitutional about it?

@wdlindsy

@Stinson_108 @wdlindsy

Incorrect. If the law passes, these provisions would go into effect immediately, likely causing confusion and difficulty as states shift the rules in the months leading up to the November midterm elections.

https://19thnews.org/2026/03/save-america-act-explained/

@MissConstrue @wdlindsy

I stand corrected. Perhaps I heard news of a proposal that would delay implementation till after the 2026 elections.

My fear comes true. Implementation comes on passage Challenged immediatley. SCOTUS will say it is too close to the elction to make a ruling.

Things get fixed in 2027, but only after a contaminated election

@Stinson_108 @wdlindsy One of the House measures which were voted down by GOP would have delayed implementation until 2028, giving states and courts time to sort it out.

So initially it was sold as a future item, but now that they’re about to lose, they’re changing the rules.
