The closure of Lavabit by the US Govt in 2013 should have been a wake up call to start divesting EU depencency from US infrastructure.

@marleenstikker Slightly confusing, as using secure communications between EU officials makes sense, but this subpoena is about communications with EU officials.

Makes no sense to use secure communications there.

The fact these companies cannot be trusted to keep anything handled by them secret, is another problem all together.

  • Propaganda and posturing. In the second sentence of the letter send to all parties, they frame "the European Commission and European Union (EU) Member States" as "foreign censors".

  • "Ill doers are ill deemers", or as we say in Dutch: "Zo de waard is, vertrouwd hij zijn gasten". Jordan et al know how they scheme in secrecy with their US company collaborators, so they immediately assume EU officials are doing the same.

    @marleenstikker the silver lining is that with the next US elections being in the remote future, EU politicos can no longer revert to their habitual stupor, in the hope of some "reversion to normal" that will relieve them of actually having to act with intelligence and purpose.

    @marleenstikker Although it prompted a sharp intake of breath when I read the article this action is not surprising in the context of the classified documents that Edward Snowden made public in 2013.

    What is surprising is that the US authorities have made these requests public as the Snowden leaks showed that such demands for information were handled by secret courts.

    It seems to me that this is designed to make the EU in general and individual EU officials feel as uncomfortable as possible.

    @marleenstikker hopelijk zien ze dit in Den Haag, ze kunnen ook navragen bij de ICJ waar verschillende rechters in grote problemen zijn geraakt door het afsluiten van de USA services. In België zijn de ambtenaren inmiddels van WhatsApp af en gebruiken een Belgisch platform Beam.. hoogstwaarschijnlijk gaat @willemijnaerdts de USA navelstreng doorknippen en wordt European open source de norm.. kunnen ze ook de IPhones inleveren en een Nederlands product gebruiken Fairphone 6
