To keep costs down, most episodes of Star Trek were filmed on Earth instead of on location in outer space.
@dgar Bean counters! 🙄

@dgar

Also, the Ferengi drive a hard bargain, and could not be signed up.
So they hired human actors with prosthetic foreheads on their real heads.

@purrperl Morn volunteered though. He did it for his love of the creative arts and enjoyed supporting the actors. What a legend.
@purrperl @dgar But they gave them all a rock to wind a piece of string around.
@dgar
Not only that but most of the aliens were replaced with humans under weird makeup, hairdos or rubber suits.
@Soldusty @dgar even the food was replaced with wooden blocks to reduce costs
@old_angry_queer @dgar
And then somebody got fired for using expensive dyes instead of cheap lead paint.
@Soldusty @dgar the paint tasted better too
@old_angry_queer @dgar
Aah, I love the taste of lead in the morning.
@dgar However, most scenes on Cardassia were filmed on location, due to lax labor laws and the ability to hire non-union extras. This was also partially subsidized by the Cardassian Ministry of Information who were reportedly fine with "being portrayed as the bad guys, as long as we look tough and ruthless."

@dgar

Lately, costs where cut by another 50% – they're filming them on a half-O deck now.

@dgar the second false assumption is, that it was filmed on the move. Because of the Trek part. In reality it was a stationary production, mostly on some parking property of the studios, however Star Station, Star Stationary and Star Parking Lot fell through because the fans didn't had any good reactions to them. The first movie shows how problematic this three concepts are...
😬
@dgar But of course 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and Journey to the Center of the Earth were done on location, right? Right????
@dgar Another TIL milestone for me.

@dgar

Space. The finally affordable frontier.

@davidtheeviloverlord @dgar Space is expensive. Vastly, hugely mindbogglingly expensive.
@dgar earth is in space, dummy.
@Samosthenurus wait until we go out into the solar system!!
🤭😂
@dgar Unfortunately, sometimes you can tell.
@dgar Are you listening, Stanley Kubrick?!
@dgar
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
@dgar Stargate is all filmed on location - but most of the Milky Way happens to look like British Columbia anyway, so the effect is a bit muted.
@dgar
Stop your conspiration theories

@dgar I remember watching a documentary about the Moon landings, and in the credits it said:

Filmed on location.
